A Diverse Population • Immigrants- people who move permanently to a new country. • Traditions (Cake, Pinata, Parades, Fireworks) • 13% of all Americans were born in another country • 98% of all people living in the U.S. are descendents from another country • All worked together to build a nation!

History of Immigration • Native Americans- believed to have originated from Asia (20,000 years ago) • 1500’s- Spanish settlers came to FL, CA, and TX • 1600’s- France, Netherlands, and England came in mainly eastern U.S. • 1600-1700’s- Germany, Sweden, Ireland. And Scotland • Created the 13 colonies • 1830-1860- 5 mil from Ireland & Germany due to poverty • 1848- immigration increased in U.S.-Gold Rush (CA) • 1860-1890-10 mil from Denmark, Norway, Sweden • 1890-1924-22 mil from Italy, Greece, Poland, and Russia

  4. History of Immigration • Most people came to the U.S. voluntarily but some were forced • African slave trade • 1807-Congress banned slave trade in U.S. • 500,000 Africans had already arrived from the slave trade

Ongoing Transformation • 1830-1930- population 12 to 120 million • 40 million=immigrants • New traditions born • Changes in Population (Mid 1800’s) • RuralCities • Higher wages • African Americans joined workforce after Civil War • Blue-Collar Workers= factory workers • White-Collar Workers= schools, offices, stores • Service Economy- work done for someone else

  6. American Diversity • Ethnic Group= members share a common national, cultural, or racial background • How would you classify the U.S.? • 2040- minority groups will be the majority! • Religious Diversity: • Christian (173 mil), Judaism, Islam, Buddhism –(9 mil)

  7. Values and Institutions • Do you agree with your friends about what is good or bad? • Values- general principles or beliefs one uses to make decisions about what is desirable or undesirable • Shared freedom, equality, opportunity, justice, and democracy • Declaration of Independence

  8. Institutions Social Institutions Government Institutions • Institutions= key practices, relationships, and organizations in a society • Family • Religious Institutions • Schools • Social- clubs, volunteer groups • Freedom- right to choose arbitrarily what you want • Popular Soverignty= the idea that the gov’t receives its power from the people • Constitution • Three part Government • Bill of Rights
