Chapter 1 Lesson 1: Being an American What are some traditions that your family practices? Do you know what country(ies) your family is from? Why is the U.S. known as a “Nation of Immigrants”? Immigrants: People who move permanently to a new country.(Around 13% of U.S. pop. Was born elsewhere)
History of Immigration • 20,000 years ago- 1st people arrive in land that would be U.S. (Asia- native americans) • 1500’s- Spanish- FL, TX, CA • 1600’s- French, Dutch, English began to arrive • French: Canada, along Mississippi R, Louisiana • Dutch: New Amsterdam (NY) • English: E. Coast, Jamestown (1607) • Late 1600’s – 1700’s: German, Swedish, Irish, and Scottish
A History of Immigration • Early 1600’s – 1807: Over 500,000 Africans brought by force (Western & central Africa- “Middle Passage” • 1830’s-1860’s- Over 5 million people came to the U.S. (Ireland, Germany, gold rush) • 1860-1890- Another 10 million more (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) • 1890- 1924: Around 22 million from Southern & Eastern Europe (Greece, Italy, Poland, Russia)
Immigration Transformation • 1830-1930: U.S. pop. Climbed from 12 million to around 120 million • Mid 1800’s: Urbanization movement (factories) • “Great Migration”- newly freed African Amer’s. moved northward • By 1920- over ½ of U.S. pop. Lived in cities (Blue collar v. white collar)
Immigration Transformation • Recently, more women in labor force • Decline of manufacturing jobs, increase in “Service” jobs. “Outsourcing” Ethnic Group- People in America that share a common national, cultural, or racial background (Diversity)
Values & Institutions • Values: Broad ideas about what is good and bad. • What kind of values have allowed American diversity to prosper? • Institutions: Key practices, relationships, and organizations in a society. • What is the most important institution in American life? Other important institutions?
Government Institutions • Popular Sovereignty: The ability of people to rule over themselves (DOI) • 2 ideals of American gov’t • Representative gov’t. • Limited gov’t. (checks, Bill of Rights)
