Welcome to the World of Coaching • Strangely, the coach is seen as the “village idiot” --- never satisfying everyone • If coaches are so stupid, why is so much expected of them ? • It’s been said that the most thankless job in soccer is that of the referee --- however, after the game the referee leaves • It is the coach who has to deal with the discontent and disappointed people involved

  3. Successful Coaching • The most successful coaches are those who have a great concept of : the big picture over the long term • Being a youth coach is like working without a watch. Time is on your side • The best coaches combine practical and theoretical knowledge with their personal experience

The Advantages of Having Played Soccer • A certain level of technical and tactical knowledge • Instinct, intuition, “gut-feeling”, insight • Anticipation, imagination, creativity • Intimate knowledge and understanding in order to teach others • Hard to share what you don’t have …… ……. first-hand experience

From Player to Coach • The fact that you were a top player is no guarantee that you will be a good coach • Knowledge and experience form a good base, but there is much more - influence/affect players • Hristo Stoitchkov – former great player “ the best thing I can do is study the game ……. learn all that I can ……………. and be thoroughly prepared “

  6. Fundamental Skill of a Coach • Know whether a player can play or not • If he can, in what position • Identify and correct weaknesses • Tactically, select the best team, see how the game develops, make changes as necessary

  7. Player Evaluation – TIPS (Ajax) T.. Technique – mastery of ball skills while under game pressure I .. Insight -- a picture of everything that is going on around you with a solution P.. Personality– a winner’s mentality – hate to lose – good team player – S.. Speed – physical, technical and tactical – speed of thought and play

The Demands Made on the Coach • To “read” the soccer situation • To arrange the soccer situation to fit the level of the players • To explain clearly the soccer problems involved ( what’s wrong ) • To provide the right example and to demonstrate it • To create a learning atmosphere and a desire to do well

The Basis of Coaching is Observation • Shrewd observation and a good memory are fundamental to good coaching • Let the kids play and then base your coaching on their performance • A coach’s view of the game must differ from that of a loyal supporter, or even a neutral spectator • A coach should occupy his time by analyzing the causes and effects which determine the outcome of the game.

A good coach see the game in terms of clear objectives (what is the aim, purpose) • A coach must not allow his enthusiasm to run away with him and impair his ability to observe and assess. • The coach must be an active observer – he must see the details that escape the ordinary spectator • Coaches focus primarily on causes, others focus on effects ( end result)

  12. A Coaching Model • Planning and preparation are essential to coaching • Organization (plan) and structure (form) are very important in the learning process • Where to start • What to achieve • How to go about it • How did it go

The Coach’s Objective • Enjoyment, mastery of the game , winning • Coaching is about the game & how it unfolds, • About player development and competitive maturity • And it is about enjoyment • Young players need certain skills and they can be practiced in small-sided games with clear objectives.

  14. Players Learn Best • Players learn best through playing the game. Players should always be exposed to the demands of the game. • Young players should be confronted with enjoyable challenges they can cope with • It is important that they experience success in these activities, and then be exposed to higher forms of challenge
