How to use F Keys (Function Keys) on Mac When you sit down in front of your Mac now, take a look at the Mac keyboard. It has all of the characters you would expect, but there are a few keys along the top you might not be familiar with. The function keys on a MacBook have FX wrote on them, where X X is replaced with a number, like f1, f2, f3, f4 etc., so what do they do? Looking at the F keys on a Mac keyboard, you will find an icon above the function key number, and that icon shows what else the key is capable of, and with 12 keys available, they can do quite a bit. In addition, standard function keys can be used differently within different apps, so be sure to check the keyboard shortcut options for your favourite apps to see if there are any you can use. As Macs come pre-programmed with icons describing their intended use, their function keys are not the most versatile.
