  1. DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A SMOKING SHELTER? AND HOW TO MAKE A SMOKING AREA? Since the government implemented new legislation in 2007 that declared public areas in the entirety of the UK smoke-free, we’ve seen a rise in the demand for smoking shelters. Despite the government’s efforts to eradicate smoking, the habit still exists and the need for outside smoking shelters also continues. Due to the smoking ban, businesses began to install these structures and created designated smoking areas in order to accommodate their employees, patrons, and others who visit their premises.

  2. WHAT IS A SMOKING SHELTER? Being suppliers of smoking shelters we can help you to understand the ins and outs of these structures. Whether it’s a smoking shelter for your workplace or an outdoor smoking shelter for home, here at Tamstar we’re here to help you with any questions and queries you may have regarding smoking shelters.

  3. Firstly, you may be asking – what is a smoking shelter? A smoking shelter is a structure/area that is covered by a roof or ceiling or is simply a canopied area. These areas are meant to shield those who smoke from the elements whilst they are making use of the designated smoking area. It’s worth noting that although the main purpose of smoking shelters is to protect and shield smokers from wind, rain, and sunshine.

  4. However, in order to comply with the UK’s regulations, smoking shelters must not be substantially closed and not have any fittings that can be opened or closed that enclose over 50% of the shelter. To put it simply, these structures may also include a back and sides, but in order to comply with the law, they cannot be a fully enclosed space.

  5. DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A SMOKING SHELTER? If you’re thinking about investing in a smoking shelter installation, then it’s important that you get the proper planning permission. Regardless of whether your shelter is to be attached to the building or free-standing, all permanent external structures require planning permission. As a result, it is vital that you get this cleared with your local authorities before you begin the installation.

  6. It is also important to note that for structures bigger than 15m2 you may need building regulation approval. And with any smoking shelter over 30m2, you will most definitely need building regulation approval.

  7. HOW TO MAKE A SMOKING AREA Our Tamstar smoking shelterscome in a range of designs, finishes and sizes. This allows you to select a smoking shelter that works best for you and choose a design that will accommodate those who will be in use of the shelter nicely. When you start planning to make a smoking area, there are a few things you will need to keep in mind. Primarily, you will need to decide upon a location. It is ideal to plan your smoking shelter installation in a space away from high-traffic areas and away from adjoining building structures.

  8. Once you’ve found the perfect placement for your outdoor smoking shelter, you will then need to select a design and size that will work best for you. For example, smaller businesses with fewer visitors may only need a small wall-mounted smoking canopy that accommodates 4 people. Whereas larger companies may need to invest in a smoking/vaping shelter that can house 20 people at a time.

  9. Our Tamstar smoking shelters are delivered packaged flat, with clear instructions for easy self-installation. Typically, the process of installation will take two people around 5 hours. However, we do offer onsite assembly, carried out by experienced sub-contractors.

  10. CHOOSING YOUR SMOKING SHELTER ACCESSORIES Although the main component of a smoking shelter is the structure. It is also worthwhile including some staple smoking shelter accessories. Not only will smoking shelter accessories help your smoking area to look the part. But they will also help to keep it clean, improve safety and reduce litter in the surrounding areas. Here at Tamstar, we supply a range of smoking shelter accessories. So, to make your decision easier, here is a little breakdown of our favourite products and why you should consider investing in them for your outdoor smoking shelter.

  11. SMOKING OR VAPING AREA STICKER A smoking or vaping area sticker is a great smoking shelter accessory to incorporate into your smoking area plans. Not only will this sticker alert people to the fact that there is a designated smoking area for them to use. It will also help to limit second-hand smoke exposure to non-smokers as they will be well aware to stay away from the area.

  12. CIGARETTE BINS & ASHTRAYS Cigarette Bins & Ashtrays are another excellent addition to any smoking area. In fact, they’re actually essential. Cigarettes are the number 1 littered item in the UK, so it’s extremely important you have somewhere for smokers to dispose of them properly. Installing a cigarette bin in your smoking area will ensure that there is a designated and safe place for cigarette butts to be disposed of.

  13. Due to the smell and the fire hazard, it’s important to note that Cigarette Bins & Ashtraysare usually made out of stainless steel or a fire-safe material and have been specially designed for this purpose. There are generally two main designs to choose from. Here at Tamstar, we supply both wall-mounted and floor-mounted cigarette bins.

  14. BENCHES Although you are not legally required to have seating available in your smoking shelter, it is a nice addition to make. Benches will make the area more appealing and encourage the area to be used properly and will also accommodate those who may have difficulty standing for short or long periods of time. As a result, it is quite important to consider adding a bench.
