  2. P A G E   1 RANCHI CITY Ranchi, city, capital of Jharkhand state, northeastern India. It lies along the Subarnarekha River. Ranchi was constituted a municipality in 1869. The city has major rail and road connections and is the centre of the region’s agricultural, cotton, and tea trade. Silk production and the manufacture of shellac and heavy machine tools are the city’s major industries. Ranchi is situated on the Ranchi Plateau of the eastern Chota Nagpur plateau system, with lofty flat-topped hills (pats) in the northwest. An escarpment to the east and south of the city, from which several scenic waterfalls tumble, marks the edge of the plateau. Ranchi lies at 23°22′N 85°20′E near to the Tropic of Cancer . Its municipal area is 652.02 km2 (251.75 sq mi), and its average elevation is 651 m above sea level. Ranchi is located in the southern part of the Chota Nagpur plateau, which is the eastern section of the Deccan plateau. Ranchi has a hilly topography and its dense tropical forests a combination that produces a relatively moderate climate compared to the rest of the state. GEOGRAPHY RANCHI

  3. P A G E 2 CLIMATE The climate in Ranchi is warm and temperate. In winter, there is much less rainfall in Ranchi than in summer. This climate is considered to be Cwa according to the Köppen- Geiger climate classification. In Ranchi, the average annual temperature is 23.7 °C. Precipitation here averages 1397 mm. The driest month is December, with 5 mm of rain. With an average of 349 mm, the most precipitation falls in July.

  4. P A G E 3 AVERAGE TEMPERATURE May is the warmest month of the year. The temperature in May averages 31.1 °C. January has the lowest average temperature of the year. It is 16.7 °C. There is a difference of 344 mm of precipitation between the driest and wettest months. During the year, the average temperatures vary by 14.4 °C.

  5. P A G E 4 CULTURE & HERITAGE Ranchi has been influenced by Buddhism, Jainism, the Mughals and Hindu kings. Tribal groups during the Sarhul festival gather in Ranchi and organise a procession. Traditional folk music, instruments and dances are the norm. The area is known for the Dokra art form while festivals such as Basant Panchami, Holi, Diwali, Chath, Jityya Bhaiya are celebrated here. Some of the popular dance forms are Chhau and Santhal, which are group dances performed by the Santhal tribe. Karma is another popular folk dance performed in the month of August during the Karma festival. The popular cuisines include local varieties such as Arsa, Dhuska, Chhilka, Chhilka, besides others. Due to its thick foliage local people have made use of bamboo and wood to create craftworks like baskets, hunting and fishing equipment, rice huskers etc all Wild grass called ‘sabai grass’ is dyed and woven into bowls, pen-stands, coasters, mats, colourful boxes, dolls, etc.

  6. P A G E 5 FOOD Rice is the most staple food of Ranchi. The Restaurants of Ranchi serve almost all types of food. They serve many type of cuisine styles like Mexican, continental, North Indian and they even serve International type cuisines in some hotels. Kaju Barfi, Malai kachori, Boondi Ladoo, Gond ke Ladoo, Pakeeza Roll and Moti Pak are some of the special types of sweets are available in large numbers. LANGUAGES AND RELIGIONS Hindi is the most spoken language in this district. English, Oraon, Mundari, Nagpuri, Kurmal and Bengali are the other languages that are spoken by the people of Ranchi. The style of speaking of the people of Ranchi is very to the ears. The religions that are followed here are Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. The tribal people have their own religious practices called as Sarna. Because of the Christian influence there are also tribal converts.

  7. P A G E 6 DEMOGRAPHICS As of 2011 India census, Ranchi municipal corporation has a population of 1,126,741, making it the 46th largest urban city in India. Males constitute 51.3% of the population and females 48.7%. Ranchi city has an average literacy rate of 87.68% (census 2011). The city witnessed a sudden surge in population after the declaration of the new state of Jharkhand in 2000. Owing to the rising employment opportunities and opening of numerous regional and state level offices, banks, and FMCG companies, the city witnessed a rapid influx of employment seeking migrants. As per a study done by ASSOCHAM in late 2010, Ranchi was one of the highest employment generating Tier-III cities in India with a share of 16.8%, followed by Mangalore and Mysore.
