Do Taqueria27 Tacos Qualify as Comfort Food?

Watching one of those restaurant review shows on television exposes one to a lot of comfort food. In fact, there are plenty of restaurants that market themselves as being great places to find the comfort foods associated with a particular cuisine. That got us to thinking whether or not anything on our menu would be considered comfort food. We would like to think so, but we understand that definitions are different. 1. The dictionary definition of 'comfort food' is food that is prepared in a traditional style and with some nostalgic or sentimental appeal. At least that's how the Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines it. Other people have defined it as food that brings back comforting memories of childhood. In other words, what mom used to make. As a Salt Lake City Mexican restaurant, we do things a little bit differently. We make a concerted effort to blend both traditional and new interpretations of some of your favorite Latin American recipes. To the extent that we lean on tradition, you can say that we offer comfort food. But our new interpretations might not qualify. So perhaps it's time to redefine what comfort food is. Food That Makes You Feel Good We get the fact that comfort food brings back memories for a lot of people. The food that mom used to make reminds us of the safety and security of those childhood years. Maybe mom's food reminds us of grandparents and other extended family members. Maybe it reminds us of special holidays.

  2. In the end though, isn't comfort food really just food that makes you feel good? Perhaps it is. We get that it's awesome to find food that tastes like what mom used to make. But it is equally awesome to try new foods. And with those new foods, you can create new memories that will bring you just as much comfort 20 or 30 years from now. Food is an interesting thing in that it evokes emotional responses in people. Perhaps that's why food is so closely associated with memory. Invoke a strong enough emotional response and you are bound to remember whatever you were doing when that emotional response occurred. To that end, we want Taqueria27 be more than just a Salt Lake City Mexican restaurant. We want the food we serve to stimulate a response from each and every customer. Hopefully that response will be good more often than not. If it is, the food and atmosphere we offer should make people feel good. Food That Makes You Feel Right As long as we are redefining comfort food, we would also like to think that it is food that makes you feel 'right'. What do we mean by that? Think of it in terms of the custom of giving chicken soup to someone who's sick. It is an old custom that dates back many, many years. Chicken soup probably doesn't have any medical benefits other than preventing someone from getting dehydrated. And yet, the flavor and temperature of chicken soup can make you feel like everything is right with the world. You might be ill, but the fact that someone has taken the time to make you a bowl of soup says that someone cares about you. It lets you know that this too will pass. We'd like to think that our food can help people feel right about the world even when things aren't going so well. If just for a small amount of time spent enjoying a plate of traditional tacos, our guests can relax and find a bit of peace. That's real comfort food.
