  1. Networking and Internetworking Devices ดร. อนันต์ ผลเพิ่ม Anan Phonphoem, Ph.D. anan@cpe.ku.ac.th http://www.cpe.ku.ac.th/~anan Computer Engineering Department Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand

  2. Outline • Network Devices • Repeater/Hub/Bridge/Router/Gateway • Backbone Network • Bus/Star/VLAN

  3. Connecting Devices Networking Devices Internetworking Devices Repeaters Bridges Routers Gateways

  4. Connecting Devices Hub

  5. Repeater • Extend the physical length • No network function has been changed • Location is matter

  6. Function of repeater Repeater is not exactly as same as Amplifier

  7. Hub • Actually is a multiport repeater • Star / Tree Topology

  8. Bridge

  9. Bridge • Divide a large network into smaller segment • Isolating and controlling the link problems (e.g. congestion) • Regenerate signal + Checking Physical Address and forward only to the specified segment

  10. Function of a bridge

  11. Multiport bridge

  12. Routers

  13. Routers in an internet

  14. Routers • Act like stations on a network • Multi-home • Definition (Goal) • “Learning how to get from here to there." • “Process of discovering, selecting, and employing paths from one place to another (or to many others) in a network”[from David M. Piscitello, Bellcore and A. Lyman Chapin, BBN]

  15. Routing Principle • Goal: Arriving at the destination • Considerations: • Direct route (shortest) • Reliable route • Cheap route • Safe route • Scenic route 

  16. Gateways (protocol converter)

  17. A gateway SNA network (IBM) Netware network (Novell)

  18. Connecting Devices Networking Devices Internetworking Devices Repeaters Bridges Routers Gateways
