What are Network Devices? • A computer network is any set of computers or devices connected to each other • Networks generally involve at least two devices capable of being networked with at least one usually being a computer. • Examples • Internet • wide area network: that is the largest to ever exist, or a small home • local area network (LAN) with two computers connected with standard networking cables connecting to a network interface card in each computer.
Modems and Routers • Cable/DSL Modem • Wireless Router
8-Port Switch & Cat 5 Cable • Network Interface Card (NIC)
Wireless Adapters PCI Adapter PC Card Wireless USB Adapter

Major Brands of Products and Cost • Brand: NETGEAR (Port Switch) Price:$42.99 • Nortel ENET SWITCH 470 Price:$1,976.27 • Brand: D-Link Systems (Cable Modem) Price: $59.04 • Motorola Price: $108
Bridges, Network Segments, Data link layer and Switch's
A network bridge connects multiple network segments at the data link layer of the OSI model. Bridges are similar to repeaters or network hubs, devices that connect network segments at the physical layer, however a bridge works by using bridging where traffic from one network is managed rather than simply rebroadcast to adjacent network segments.
Linksy: home use, price range $40- $200 • Zyxel: company use, price range $100-$400
A network segment is a portion of a computer network separated by a computer networking device, including: • Repeater or Ethernet hub • Bridge or switch • Router
Hub and Router prices • Chanel plus: $300-$500 • Nortel Hubs: $1,200-$3,000
A switch is a networking device that performs transparent bridging at up to the speed of the hardware. Common hardware includes switches, which can connect at 10, 100, or 1000 megabits per second, at half or full duplex. Half duplex means that the device can only send or receive any given time, whereas full duplex can send and receive at the same time. The use of specially designed expansion also makes it possible to have large numbers of connections utilizing different mediums of networking, including Ethernet, Fibre Channel.
Types of Switch's • Non managed • Managed • Smart / intelligent
Unmanaged switches have no configuration interface. They are typically found in SOHO environments • Managed switches are found in medium/large network environments and come at a higher price and quality. The task of managing usually requires understanding of Layer 2 networks. • Smart (or intelligent) switches are usually managed switches with a limited set of features.
Switch Prices • Linksy: $20-$60 • Cisco: $200-$400 • Netgear:$40-$75
The main reason for purchasing hubs rather than switches was the price. However this has changed as the prices of switches has decreased. • Hubs can still be useful in special circumstances: • Connecting a protocol analyzer to a hub allows it to see all the traffic on the segment. • Computer clusters require all the computers to receive all the traffic going to the cluster. • A hub with a 10BASE2 port is probably the most inexpensive way to connect devices that only support 10BASE2

An Ethernet hub is a device for connecting multiple devices together, making them act as a single segment. The device is a form of mulitport repeater. Ethernet hubs are also responsible for forwarding a jam signal to all ports if it detects a collision. • A jam signal is a signal that carries a bit pattern sent by a data station to inform the other stations that they must not transmit.
