Repeater • A repeater is used to regenerate a signal and extend the length of a network. • Operates at the physical layer of the OSI reference model. • Introduces propagation delays by examining and regenerating signal. Hence number of repeaters have to be limited. • Data link and network layer protocols on linked segments must be the same. • Can connect different media.
Hub • A hub is essentially a multi-port repeater. • Data received on one port is automatically passed to all other ports within the hub. • Operates at the physical layer. • Data link and network layers must be the same. • Physical media can be different.
Bridge • Networking device that works at the data link layer to filter traffic according to the packet’s hardware destination address. • Layer two device. • Connects two segments together. • Primary function is to filter traffic between segments. • Can connect segments that used the same data link and network protocol. Physical media may differ.
Switch • Essentially a multi-port bridge. • Layer two device • Devices have access to the full stated bandwidth. • http://www.cisco.com/image/gif/paws/10607/lan-switch-transparent.swf
Router • Connects two network segments that use the same or different data link protocols but the same network protocol. • Cabling can be different. • Layer three device. • Only passes traffic specifically addressed to it. • Used to build internetworks.
Router (Continued) • Router types • Static • Dynamic • Dynamic Routing algorithms • Distance vector algorithm (e.g. RIP). • Link-state algorithm (OSPF).
Gateway • Network device that translate information between protocols or completely different networks such a TCP/IP to IPX/SPX. • Operates at the application layer. • Connects segments running different or similar data link and network protocols. • Performs connectivity, session management, and data translation.
