  2. Athletes sustain unique injuries which are different from their non-athletic counterparts? Athletes have unique needs or circumstances which require sports medicine specialty care? Athletes are more motivated than most “regular” patients? Athletes “heal” more quickly than other “regular” patients? Athletes should be afforded special “perks” (ex. convenient appointment times, rapid scheduling of radiology, surgery, etc) Athletes should have access to the best medical personnel and equipment?   7. Athletes have unique needs or circumstances which require sports medicine specialty care? • Quick return (short seasons/ careers) • High demands • Know their sport (earlier return) • Know rules of their game (bracing) • Psychology

  8. Athletes are more motivated than most “regular” patients? • Pain (everyone’s motivated to decrease) • No incentive to be “out” • Except psychological issues • Parental/ peer pressure • Small fish/ big pond • Coach/ teammate conflict

  9. Athletes “heal” more quickly than other “regular” patients? • Biologic healing rates • Athlete vs. non • Healthy vs non • Associated factors • Regain strength • Higher level to start with….but higher demands • Knowledge
