Handbook of Reading Research III(2000) • Giving students a list of words to look up and memorize does not lead to real understanding. • Students should be active in developing their understanding of words. • Students should personalize word meaning. • Students should be immersed in words. • Students should build on multiple sources of information to learn words through repeated exposures.
National Reading Panel(2000) • Combined vocabulary with comprehension • Based on 50 research studies • Vocabulary can be taught directly and indirectly • Students can learn incidentally through wide reading • Students should be actively involved in reading
General agreement(Blachowicz, Fisher and Ogle, 2006) • Vocabulary predicts comprehension • Gap in vocabulary between economically disadvantaged and advantaged children persists through school • Critical factor in success of English-learners • Affects comprehension differently in different kinds of texts

Daffy Dictionary: How does it work? • Pick a prefix, a root, and a suffix • Put together to make a new work • KEY: don’t try to recreate known words; making up new words is a low-anxiety activity
