About Sydney • Sydneyis the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. • Sydney is mostly Triassic rock, with some recent igneous dykes and volcanic necks. • The city is rarely affected by cyclones, although remnants of ex-cyclones do affect the city. • Sydney's central business district extends southwards for about 3 km (2 mi) from Sydney Cove to the area around Central station.
