Thesuperbrain:intelligenthigh-performancevehiclecomputer Aswellasadvancedhardware,softwareisbecomingincreasingly importantfortheautomotiveindustry.Continentalisproactively helpingtoshapethetransitiontosoftware-basedcars,witharound 21,000softwareandITspecialistsworkingonnewandimproved productssuchashigh-performancecomputers(HPCs).Anew additiontoContinental’sextensiveHPCportfolioistheSmart CockpitHPC,apreconfiguredsystemcombiningtheinstrument cluster,infotainmentandadvanceddriverassistancesystems.Atthe IAAMOBILITY,Continentalandatech-industrypartnerwillbe usingademonstrationvehicleinhallB2/boothA12toshowhowthe SmartCockpitHPCcanmakethemobilityofthefuturearealityat minimumcostandwithinashortdevelopmenttime. VirtualdevelopmentmadeeasywithAmazonWebServices Withautomotivemanufacturersbringingnewmodelstomarketfaster andprovidingcustomerswithregularsoftwareupdates,weneednew approachestoaccelerateandbroadenthedevelopmentandtestingof automotivesoftware.Untilnow,mostfunctionalandsafetyproblems couldonlyberemediedoncethephysicalelectroniccontrolunit (ECU)wasavailable.Fixingproblemsinlaterphasessometimes resultedinuptoatenfoldincreaseindevelopmentcosts. ThesolutionisthenewvirtualElectronicControlUnit(vECU) CreatorbasedonContinentalAutomotiveEdge(CAEdge),a platformforhardwareandsoftwaredevelopmentlaunchedby ContinentalandAmazonWebServices(AWS)in2021.Automotive softwaredevelopersarealreadyabletousethevECUCreatorto decouplehardwareandsoftwaredecision-making,whilethevirtual simulationofdigitalfunctionsenablesengineerstoquicklyand continuouslyimprovemicrocontroller-basedECUs,zonecontrollers andhigh-performancecomputers.ThankstovECUs,software applicationscanbe90 percentprogrammedbeforetheyaredeployed on thetargethardware,greatlyincreasingtheefficiencyofproduct

Towardan autonomousfuture Continentalcontinuestodriveforwardautonomousdriving.Ithas teamedupwithstrategicpartnerandUSsemiconductorspecialist Ambarella.Bothtechnologycompaniesarejointlydeveloping integratedfull-stacksystemsforassistedandautomateddriving. ThesescalablemultisensorsystemsoperateusingAI,includingafull softwarestackcomprisingmodulesfrombothcompanies,and particularlypowerful,energy-efficientAIsystemsonchipfrom Ambarella,aswellashigh-resolutioncameras,radarandlidarsensors andassociatedcontrolunitsfromContinental.Continentalrecently receivedthefirstcustomerorderforthesolutionsdevelopedjointly withAmbarellaasacompleteLevel4fallbacksystem.Atthetrade show,Continentalwillprovideinsightsintohowthesystemsolutions interactandmakemobilitymoreautonomousandsafer. Greaterprotectionforvulnerableroadusers Thesafetyofvulnerableroadusersremainsatoppriorityfor Continental.Itsmainfocusisonpreventingandprotectingagainst accidentsduetodrivererrorwhenturning,reversingandparking.In Germanyalone,accordingto theFederalStatisticalOffice,such drivingmaneuversaccountedforover50,000accidentsinvolving personalinjurylastyear.AttheIAAMOBILITY,Continentalwill presentacompact,easy-to-integratesystemsolutionfordynamic near-fieldprojectionsbasedonmicro-LEDtechnology.This systemwillbeabletosignalwhenavehiclechangesdirection,for example,byprojectingdynamicwarningsorvehicledimensionsin thevehicle’simmediatesurroundingswithmicro-LEDs. Safeandsustainablebrakesystems Brakesareoneofthemostimportantsafetyfeaturesinvehicles.They notonlyhavetocontributetodrivingsafetyinhazardoussituations, buttheymustalsoenhancevehicleefficiency.Inotherwords,they musthelptoreduceCO2emissionsandparticleemissions(inthecase

Oneexampleisasemi-drybrakesystem,whichuses“dry” electromechanicalbrakesontherearaxlethatdonotrequirebrake fluid.Theadvantageforautomotivemanufacturersisthatthereisno needtofillandbleedthebrakesystemduringproduction.Whatis more,thissystemmeansalotlessbrakefluidwillneedtobeusedand thereforedisposedof–manymillionsoflitersinfact. SPACEDdesignconceptforwellnessinthevehicle Thetrendofcocooningemphasizestheimportanceofourhomesas placesofretreat,safetyandcomfort,withabigpartofthisbeing sustainableandconvenientsolutions.Wellnessissettoplayamajor roleinvehicleinteriorsaswell,transformingvehiclesintoanew spacetoliveinandenjoy. AttheexhibitioninMunich,Continentalwillofferaglimpseintothe interiorspaceofautonomousmobilitywithitsSPACEDdesign concept.The“D”inthename“SPACED”standsforthehighdesign standardsofthisvisionaryconcept. Alsoonshowwill bethesurfacematerialsBenovaEcoProtect,which makesalastingvisualimpressionandiscertifiedwiththePETAlabel forveganproducts,Acella,whichisespeciallysustainablethankstoitsbio-basedrawmaterialsandrecycledcontent,aswellasbeing highlycustomizable,andXpreshnHyliteConcept,a translucentsurfacematerialthatallowsfornewdesignsandfunctions.Withtheir sustainability,attractiveandnaturaldesignandversatiletechnology, thesesurfacestakecomfortanddrivingtoawholenewlevel. EnhancedsustainabilityontheroadthankstoContinentaltires Continental’sexceptionalmaterialsexpertiseisreflectedinits sustainabletireinnovations.Thecompanywillunveilanewconcept tiretothepublicforthefirsttimeattheIAAMOBILITY.Itsfocus particularlyonenergy-efficienturbandriving.

Continentalfirstpresentedthemostsustainableproductiontireinthe industryatitsTechShowthissummer.Comprisingupto65percent renewable,recycledandmassbalance-certifiedmaterials,the UltraContactNXTcombinesahighshareofsustainablematerials withmaximumsafety.Productionof thetirestartedinJuly,and19 sizesintotalwillbeavailableattiredealersalloverEurope.Theyall havethehighestpossiblerating(“A”)oftheEUtirelabelinthe categoriesofrollingresistance,wetbrakingandexteriornoise.
