  16. A Guiding Hand and a Steady Scalpel March, Dr Rooma plays a pivotal role in raising public awareness about endometriosis, demonstrating her commitment to women's health issues on an international platform. However, she gives credit to Dr Meenakshi Jain from Florida, USA to give her the first introduction and encouragement to use Robotics for surgery. disciplines have made her a leading figure in shaping such events that foster collaboration and innovation in the medical community and today there are plenty such teaching programs in India. Dr. Rooma's commitment to advancing treatment for endometriosis was evident in her presentation, “Hysterectomy for Grade 4 Endometriosis: The Robotic Advantage” at AAGL Reykjavik 2017. This highlighted the significant benefits of robotic surgery in managing complex gynaecological conditions. At the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons (SLS)Boston in 2016, her comparative study on “Robotic- assisted Myomectomy & Laparoscopic Myomectomy” shed light on the effectiveness and advantages of robotic surgery over traditional laparoscopic methods. Her presentation on “Hybrid Myomectomy: A Series of 21 Cases” also demonstrated her ability to innovate and adapt surgical techniques for improved patient outcomes. There were two parallels to her story. The first was her meteoric rise in the male-dominated field of Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery, especially robotic surgery. The second was the mighty balancing act of work- life equilibrium. However, taking the challenge as an opportunity, Dr Rooma honed her organizational and leadership skills. Then, in 2012, the second turning point of her surgical career came. Dr. Rooma witnessed another groundbreaking technology – Robotic surgery. She said, “I had the same feeling I had in '96. This is a new technology. I have to learn it all over again. Because this is what will help people, help women, and is the future.” A Stalwart with Global Achievements Today, she is one of the most renowned robotic surgeons and a mighty mentor for younger surgeons who want to pursue it. “Having done this today, for the last one or two years, I'm now venturing into associating robotic surgery with artificial intelligence, 3D printing and virtual reality. These things will come up in my career if you talk to me four or five years later,” says Dr. Rooma. It is the third turning point, at the forefront of which she stands. Dr. Rooma's leadership is further showcased through her role in organizing three editions of RoboGynIndia in 2022, 2023 and 2024, which were exclusive conferences on gynecological robotic Surgery in Hyderabad and Gurugram. Dr. Rooma's international reputation as a leader in gynaecological robotic surgery is underscored by her extensive contributions to global medical conferences and forums. Her pioneering work has led to numerous invitations to present at prestigious international gatherings, showcasing her expertise and innovative techniques. An Exceptionally Skilled Organizational Leader Again, from 2012, Dr. Rooma learned everything about Robotic surgery independently because there were hardly any teachers or mentors. She attended conferences and interacted with peers and colleagues. Dr. Rooma is an exceptionally skilled organizational leader, recognized for her extensive experience and dedication to advancing medical knowledge and practices. A pioneer in her field, Dr. Sinha organized India's first cadaver dissection workshop on pelvic floor disorders in 2006, setting a new standard for medical education and training in gynaecology. Her visionary approach and ability to bring together experts from various Her commitment to advancing surgical techniques is reflected in her planning and executing multiple live operative workshops on Robotic Gynaecological Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. These workshops have been instrumental in training medical professionals and enhancing the surgical skills required for complex gynaecological procedures. 23. As a guest editor for the Apollo Medical Journal's special issue on Recent Advances in Obstetrics & Gynecology (September 2012), she curated critical content that has influenced the direction of ongoing research and clinical applications. Through her editorial projects, she has provided a platform for sharing groundbreaking research and best practices, influencing current and future generations of healthcare professionals. Dr. Rooma explains, “No pilot will fly a plane without processing the simulation. That concept comes in any surgical field because the patient's life is paramount. You can't just let anybody go and do any surgery. Many of these, like VR applications, artificial intelligence, and simulations, have come into surgical education. I'm getting into it so we can better teach the younger surgeons. That is one point. The second thing we can use is to diagnose and pre-plan the surgery. Suppose I have a very complex surgery; I can do a virtual reality surgery of that patient before I even enter the OT so that I know what steps I have to take, what I have to protect, what I have to remove, and all those things. These are some of the fields that are coming. Many more are coming up, though not in general clinical practice at present. However, it is the immediate future.” medical knowledge and education on Doctors Day in 2018, further cementing her role as a mentor and leader in the medical community. While we might keep thinking of them as some futuristic helpers from the latest sci-fi movies, in reality, these artificially intelligent machines are increasingly becoming a part of modern medicine. Over the past few years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, robotics has surged forward in various medical fields, including gynaecology. And let me tell you, the pandemic didn’t just change the way we live, it reshaped the way surgeries, especially robotic ones, are performed. Elective surgeries, including many gynaecological procedures, were postponed or cancelled altogether. The focus shifted to handling the virus, and understandably so. However, something fascinating happened in the world of robotic surgery during this time. *The Rise of Robotic Surgery Pre-COVID Before we talk about the pandemic, it’s essential to understand that robotic surgery was already gaining traction in gynaecology. Think back to a time when surgical procedures involved large incisions, longer recovery times, and a bit of old-fashioned guesswork. Robotic-assisted surgeries, powered by systems like the Da Vinci robot, began to change all of that. These robots allowed surgeons to perform intricate operations with more precision through smaller incisions, reducing blood loss, scarring, and healing time. For patients undergoing gynaecological procedures—whether it’s for a hysterectomy, myomectomy, or endometriosis treatment—robotics opened up a new frontier in minimally invasive surgeries. These tiny robots With the pandemic came the need for surgeries that minimized patient contact, reduced the time spent in hospitals, and cut down the risk of infections. This is where robotic surgeries fit in perfectly. The technology allowed surgeons to operate with minimal touch, meaning fewer medical staff were needed in the operating room. I have always been making efforts to contribute to it as and when it is possible. I worked with MTI (Medico Trip India) Pvt Ltd, wherein we were recognized as the best startup in 2019 by Medlinks India. It has always been my dedication, passion, and constant mental planning that pushes me to attain my objectives. I always follow my heart. I enjoy doing things that make me happy while balancing other circumstances. Delighted Patients’ Testimonials: *Mansi Kumawat – Dr Shubhi is the humblest and most friendly gynaecologist I have ever met. She showed genuine concern, unlike others. I would highly recommend her. *Neha Pareek – It is a great result in the 4-year PCOD problem, and Dr Shubhi has been very supportive. I am very happy. I had undergone the PCOD treatment from Dr Shubhi Bhalla at Fortitude Ayush Clinic. She is the most positive and kind person I have ever met in my life. After undergoing 2-month treatment, I am finally getting regular periods with the help of Ayurveda. I am really thankful to her for constantly supporting me. According to you, how are gynaecology solutions crucial today, and what advancements can we expect in the future? *Swati – Dr Shubhi is an amazing doctor with deep knowledge and a friendly attitude. She is such a positive person. She cares for patients and maintains full transpar- ency about possible treatment outcomes. She saved me from repeated hormonal use and its side effects. I am always thankful to her. We will recommend Dr Shubhi’s Fortitude Ayush Clinic for the preparation of natural pregnancy. I got a positive test this month. India is growing by leaps and bounds in every industry sector, including healthcare. Still, we need a lot of develop- ment and improvement in clinical setup or gynaecology solutions for women living in rural areas. As they are still far from the access to best healthcare facilities. It is very important to save the lives of pregnant women and newborns with timely treatments. What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the gynaecology space? My simple advice is to follow your dreams or shape them into goals and nurture a strong determination to achieve them ultimately. Money is an essential need for our survival. But do not get addicted to it. Because as an entrepreneur, you are not only shaping your dreams but also shaping the country, its people and the coming generations. We came across Dr. Shweta through a google search and narrowed it down because of the positive reviews online.” Ÿ Precisely for that reason, 'TVAMEVA – Only You' implies the same. We are ethical in our practices and brutally honest in our services such that patient entry is with doubts, but exit is absolutely doubtless. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ My single focus, comparable to Arjuna’s birds’ eye view, helped me stand apart, ranking in the top 100. I finally completed my formal education at this prestigious institution, where I learned skills and shaped my persona in a way that prepared me to face the world outside. I started working with some of the seniors in gynaecology to gain experience. What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the gynaecology space? Tell us more about your company’s offering and what makes it stand out in the cutthroat competition. The time to start will never be right. Start with what tools you have, and better tools will be found as you go along. Surround yourself with people discussing business, saving money, and living better. Make sure that your circle motivates and inspires you. Your business might be small, but the fact that you started something, stayed consistent during hard times and created employment for yourself is extraordinary. To end, chase the vision, not the money. The money will end up following you. TVAMEVA offers a wide range of gynaecological services that make today’s woman disease-free, and at the same time, she can rejuvenate and renew her persona with our aesthetic services provided by a qualified, skilled plastic and cosmetic surgeon. Our pillars of Compassion, Care, and convenience makes us stand out in our field. Ÿ My zeal for learning took me ahead in training in minimally invasive surgeries in gynaecology. After completing this formal training in surgery, I started my private practice in a few reputed hospitals. Being an aggressive woman and among those who believed only in my confidence, I was taken as a threat by most of the male surgeons in my field, and like no other woman, I had been through challenges on all fronts. As a woman, I connect with my patients emotionally and socially, like my valued friends and family, to address their concerns best. I provide the most recent and evidence-based treatment, which is internationally accredited. With good health, I want my patients to be the – BEST version of themselves. How do you envision scaling TVAMEVA Clinic’s operations and offerings in the future? Ÿ We have started on a very small scale. But we envision building TVAMEVA Healthcare. It will offer a wide range of services in the health sector. Despite my ever-increasing urge to do something for myself and work for myself, I started my brand in the name of Dr Shweta Shah at the age of 36 years in a very small setup on a rental basis. Like any other new venture, I barely had any patients initially, but gradually my practice started picking up. There were days when I used to wait for patients, but her consistency, and focus, led to an increase in patients. The care I provide is individualized and unique in our way. It is uniquely tailored to each patient, whether addressing gynaecological issues or providing care during pregnancy. I understand that your life is busy, and time is precious. Therefore I provide you with the option of having everything completed at your first consultation with us. I have always believed in providing the best to my patients. Despite my consultation being on the higher side than others in my field, I still had patients who would just come for me. Being a Gujarati and born in a business family, it is in my genes. She started having a roaring practice in just one year. And my USP is my availability at all times for my patients physically and digitally. I developed a team who worked on my digital platforms, and I started getting more reach. Gradually, I started my self-earned brand, TVAMEVA, which is the replica of my honesty, hard work, and consistency. Ÿ Please brief us about your journey in the Gynaecology Solutions sector and how they have made TVAMEVA excel in its niche. I was born in a mediocre, Gujarati, non-medico family where my parents always motivated me to reach heights in education. I was an average student till I pursued mine under graduation (MBBS). I procured my internship from Seth GSMC & KEMH, Mumbai. During this tenure, I decided to pursue my post-graduation in gynaecology from this reputed institute, which is the dream of most medical students. I was focused and was a trendsetter from my youth days. My strategy was to prepare only for two entrance exams (State and All India), unlike others preparing for multiple exams. Ÿ Considering the current industry scenario, what challenges do you face, and how do you drive TVAMEVA Clinic to overcome them? Nowadays, there is so much information available with just a click. People have access to everything. 36 | Sept, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com 37 | Sept, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com

This process involves the baby being delivered through the birth canal, typically after labour contractions. Vaginal delivery is often preferred when there are no complications, as it is associated with quicker recovery and fewer risks for both mother and baby. It allows the mother to be more mobile after birth and is believed to benefit the baby by promoting better immune function from exposure to the mother's vaginal flora. 42. ~Water Birth For women looking for a more natural, gentle experience, water birth is an increasingly popular choice. This method involves delivering the baby in a tub of warm water, which some believe can ease labour pain and reduce the need for pain medication. However, while water births are considered safe for low-risk pregnancies, they may not be suitable for everyone. It is vital to ensure that the water birth is performed in a facility with trained professionals who can handle any complications that may arise. ~Myomectomy For women dealing with uterine fibroids, a myomectomy may be recommended. This surgery removes the fibroids while preserving the uterus, making it a good option for women who want to maintain fertility. It can be done using traditional surgery or laparoscopic techniques, and it helps alleviate symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding or pelvic pain. Unlike a hysterectomy, the uterus remains intact, giving women the chance to conceive in the future. ~Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of one or both ovaries. This procedure is often performed to treat ovarian cancer, severe endometriosis, or as a preventive measure for women with a high risk of ovarian cancer. While it can be life-saving, removing the ovaries leads to menopause and the loss of natural hormone production, which can have significant implications for a woman’s health, including bone density loss and cardiovascular risks. ~Natural and Unmedicated Birth Some women prefer to avoid medical interventions entirely and opt for a natural, unmedicated birth. Techniques like Lamaze or Hypnobirthing teach breathing exercises and mental focus strategies to help women manage pain without drugs. While natural births offer a rewarding sense of accomplishment, they can be demanding and may require more emotional and physical preparation. This method is typically recommended for low-risk pregnancies where the mother desires to avoid the side effects of anaesthesia or pain-relief medications. ~Tubal Ligation For women who are certain they do not want to have more children, tubal ligation is a permanent form of contraception. The procedure involves blocking, tying, or cutting the fallopian tubes to prevent the egg from reaching the uterus. While it is considered a permanent solution, it’s important for women to understand that reversal procedures are not always successful. Tubal ligation offers a reliable form of birth control, but it is crucial to fully consider the implications before proceeding. ~Surgical Gynaecological Treatments In addition to childbirth, gynaecology encompasses various surgical interventions that address reproductive health issues. These surgeries can be essential for treating diseases, improving fertility, or managing chronic pain. ~Endometrial Ablation Women suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding that doesn’t respond to medication may opt for endometrial ablation. This procedure destroys the lining of the uterus to reduce or stop bleeding. It is a minimally invasive alternative to a hysterectomy and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. However, it is not suitable for women who still wish to have children, as it can affect future pregnancies. ~Hysterectomy A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, and in some cases, other reproductive organs like the ovaries and fallopian tubes. It is commonly performed to treat conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, cancer, or severe uterine bleeding. Hysterectomies can be done through various techniques, such as abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic approaches, depending on the individual case. While it can provide relief from chronic pain or life-threatening conditions, it also eliminates the possibility of pregnancy, making it a decision that should be carefully weighed. The Way into Tomorrow Childbirth and surgical treatments in gynaecology offer women a range of options tailored to their individual needs. From natural and assisted births to advanced surgical interventions, women now have more control over their reproductive health than ever before. Understanding the available choices allows women to make informed decisions, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both their well-being and family planning goals. As medical science continues to advance, gynaecological expertise will continue to evolve, offering women more opportunities for personalized and effective care. ~Laparoscopy Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used for diagnosing and treating conditions like ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or ectopic pregnancies. It involves making small incisions in the abdomen and using a camera to guide the surgery. This technique has a quicker recovery time and less postoperative pain than traditional open surgeries. It is particularly beneficial for women who want to preserve fertility or minimize scarring.
