Keynote Speaker • Michele Gorman, Young Adult Librarian and Graphic Novel ExpertMichele is the Teen Services Coordinator for the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, NC. She is in charge of teen services at twenty-four branch libraries. She manages a teen only library called the Loft. Getting Graphic • She gave a wonderful lecture on comic book history, and how they got an undeserved bad rep. She recommends GN for the high motivation – readers are more likely to look up something they missed. GN appeal to multiple intelligences –Linguistic, Spatial, and Interpersonal Intelligences. • Don’t just associate GN with reluctant readers – Big Mistake! • GN provide scaffolding for emerging readers, even ELLs.
Book Trailers with Naomi Bates • Naomi is the High School librarian at Northwest High School. • She uses Windows Movie Maker to create book trailers that are much like movie trailers. • They are fun and easy to do. Chick Lit • Chick Lit for Middle/Jr. High Girl--Monica Jenkins and Neta Childress, Arlington ISD Librarians Anna heard about some great books for 6-8th grade girls which are age appropriate and on topics important to this age group. Reading guys Recommendations: • Link to the GuysRead website • Plan a program aimed just at guys • Booktalk – include lots of nonfiction • Reading posters of MALES reading • Engage athletic coaches in reading program (ex. Reduce laps for reading!) • Buy magazines & graphic novels • Ask boys what they read • Product placement • Recruit boys to work in the library
