1. Summit Academy Toledo Secondary Student Needs Assessment Survey Results An ARRA Tech Grant Requirement December 2009 Based on surveys given to 69 students Presented by Cynthia Whitt, Julie Tressel, Amir Kadri, Charles Dooley and Richard Perz

2. What We Found That We Did Not Expect: • 29% of our students do not have a computer with internet access outside of school • We thought this number would be lower • A large number of students feel they have 21st Century Skills • They do not demonstrate these skills in the classroom on a daily basis • Only 49% of our students use electronic devices 6 or more hours of the day • We thought this number would be larger according to the statistics we have been reading • Our students are not as Tech savvy as anticipated • Most do not use other Web 2.0 tools besides MySpace, YouTube and Google • 20-30% say they learn best through traditional approaches • We thought this would be lower since we read research that states students do not learn best using this approach

What We Found That We Expected: • Only 30% feel comfortable identifying bias, plagiarism and reliable sources • Our students often struggle with these skills in the classroom • Most students were unable to recognize how they learn best • The data was not consistent—e.g. 5 students stated they learned best working in groups and working alone • Most students have little or no confidence using basic computer skills • Our students often struggle with these skills in the classroom

Ideas For Future Professional Development in Our Classes • Area One: Technology Integration • Become more informed of various software and applications in order to effectively use it in the classroom • Increase staff confidence with technology in order to focus on student learning • Gain understanding in teaching ITC, Information and Media Literacy

More Ideas For Future Professional Development in Our Classes • Area Two: Integrating Constructivism in the Classroom • Showing the teachers how to balance state standards and 21st Century skills • Help teachers develop lesson plans that match district ideology and 21st Century skills • Assist teachers in adapting from traditional educators to constructivist educators

6. More Ideas For Future Professional Development in Our Classes • Area Three: How to teach students to be 21st Century learners • Help students to learn 21st Century technology skills • Help students understand how they learn best • Get students to think independently and critically

7. In our Action Plan, we need to address these issues as individual teachers: • Promoting student leadership in the classroom • Creating 21st Century Skills focused lesson plans that align with state standards • Teach media and information literacy on a regular basis in all content areas • Time management – Covering a majority of the state standards while staying true to 21st Century vision

8. In our Action Plan, we need to address these issues as a school: • Increase students basic technology skills and move forward to advanced skills. • Increase ITC, Media and Information Literacy • Address the students deficit in 21st Century Skills between where students think they are and where they need to be. • Students will become independent, self-directed and accountable for their own learning. • Staff will use data to drive their instruction. • Fight for school policies that will allow students and teachers to use technology—including iPods—in school as cutting-edge tools for learning. • Increase staff use of 21st skill-based lessons
