  2. Should You Help Baby Animals? You are going to listen to me read aloud an article that contains a quiz about what people should do when they find baby animals. I want you to write down the answers that you think are the correct way to treat animals.

  3. Two Days in May This is a fictional story about a herd of deer that roams into a city neighborhood.

  5. appreciate: to enjoy and understand

  6. grazing: eating growing plants

  7. population: relating to the number of people or animals living in a certain place.

  8. starve: to suffer or die from not having enough food.

  10. territory: an area of land

  11. wander: to move from place to place without having a special destination.

  12. Monitor/Clarify As you read, pause to monitor how well you understand what happens in the story. Clarify any events that are confusing by rereading.

  13. Making Judgments • Active readers sometimes have to decide whether they think a character’s actions are right or wrong. This can be done by thinking of what is good about something (pros) and what is bad about something (cons).

  15. More Prefixes and Suffixes • Prefixes and Suffixes change the meaning of words. • A Prefix is added to the beginning of base words. • A Suffix is added to the end of base words. un- means “not” -ly means “in a certain way”

  16. Prefixes pre- and re- The rescue was preplanned. pre- means before This organization relocates animals. re- means again

  17. Suffixes -ful and -er That was the beginning of our peaceful protest. -ful means “full of” Mr. Smiley was the owner. -er means “someone who owns”

  34. Prefixes and Suffixes • You are going to get a crad with a prefix or a suffix on it. • I’m going to have words come up on the screen and if your prefix of suffix can be added to the word to make a new word (it can’t be a made up word), hold up your card.
