14. Our priorities: – To measure, monitor and manage our energy consumption; – To implement a carbon management programme and reduce our Carbon Footprint; and – To reduce and recycle more of our consumable waste.

Almost all of MITIE’s operations involve working with buildings: and as buildings produce almost half of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, MITIE has an important role to play in helping the country to meet its tough climate change targets. In the final quarter of 2006/07 we carried out a major exercise to measure the energy, water, fuel and waste used and produced throughout our organisation – it’s a major part of our commitment to improving how we measure and benchmark our environmental impacts against set targets. And because we don’t believe in sitting on our laurels, we've been investing to make a difference, even in the last few weeks since our environmental measurement project. Since establishing that fuel consumption is our greatest impact, at 10.8 million litres, we’ve been making improvements to the way we do things – starting right at the top. The Board has recently started a scheme across the Group to increase the use of tele and video conferencing, an initiative on which our specialist technology division will be working. MITIE is also working towards a Carbon Cap limit of 225g/km on certain vehicle purchases in the next financial year.for the environment
