1. Bridgman National Honor Society Scholarship Service Leadership Character

2. Our Purpose • “The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.”

3. Accomplishments This Year • Recycling • KIVA • Academic Adventures at RMS • March of Dimes Breadlift • Kilometers for Cam Fundraiser • Stuff-a-Truck • Veterans Day Assembly • Cystic Fibrosis Hat Week • Burrito Night • Korean War Memorial

4. Recycling • Takes place the entire school year • Bottles and cans are recycled • Bins placed throughout the school • Emptied once a week • About 10,000 pounds of bottles and cans recycled so far

5. KIVA • NHS gives microfinance loans to business people in third world countries through this organization. • Loans are $25 • People we have helped this year:

6. Fatoumata Coulibaly • Woman from Mali • Mother of 8 children • Sells grains locally from her store • Was able to purchase 3 tons of grain • Profit will help cover family and business expenses • Paid back her loan

7. Zenaida Alcantara • Woman from the Philippines with 4 children • Raises pigs for fattening and sale • Loan helped her purchase baby livestock • Hopes to use profit to improve and expand her business

8. Davit Davtyan • Man from Armenia • Runs a bakery business in his town to support his family • Was able to purchase a stove for his bakery • Profit will help Davit support his family and expand his business

9. Lumumba Achieng' • Dairy farmer from Kenya • Produces milk which he sells to he local market • Loan helped him buy a dairy cow • The profit from his business helps him improve his income, the quality of his life, and helps expand his business

10. Tutoring • Takes place at RMS • Wednesdays after school • All grade levels can come to get help on school work

11. March of Dimes Breadlift • March of Dimes does research to prevent prematurity and birth defects in infants • NHS collected money at the corner of Cleveland and Shawnee roads • Over a 4 hour period, we collected over $450, helping to contribute to the $26,565 collected by the March of Dimes • In return for donating, drivers were given a loaf of bread

12. Kilometers for Cam • Run to raise money and awareness for progeria research • Dedicated to Cameron, a 4 year old boy from St. Joe with this condition • NHS members volunteered to help organize this run and to direct the runners through the course • Over 500 runners attended this year

13. Stuff-a-Truck • NHS collects canned goods for Stuff-a-Truck organization • Teachers with a first hour were given a box for the food and the was a school-wide competition to collect the most food • Over the span of a week, the school collected about 500 items to donate to the needy in our area

14. Veterans Day Assembly • In High School • Recognizes the men who fought and died for our country • Included color guard from the local American Legion, reading of the poem “In Flanders Fields,” and the listing of Bridgman graduates who have gone into the service

15. Cystic Fibrosis Hat Week • Helps raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research • Students could pay $1 per day or $3 for the week to wear their hats to school • NHS raised $82 and donated another $68 to give a total of $150 to this cause

16. Burrito Night • Raises money for Bridgman NHS • Tickets cost $8 for a burrito, a side, and a dessert • In one night, we raised over $700 that will be put in our account so that the National Honor Society can continue to help communities.

17. Korean War Memorial • May 20th • NHS members will learn about this war, watch a parachute jump, meet and hear from veterans, and learn more about Korean culture • Sure to be an informative and special event
