  2. Caspar David Friedrich, “The Wanderer”

  3. La Salle Facts • Catholic, Christian Brothers, Philadelphia • 3500 undergraduate, 2000 PT/graduate • Sungard SCT campus – Banner/Luminis • Luminis implemented spring/summer ’03 • WebCT (CE) implemented summer ’03 • Upgraded to Luminis 3.2 fall ‘04

  4. Initial Focus • Prospective Student Portal • Customized Content – targeted announcements, roles, “stories,” “features” • “Push” toward portal use – marketing, delivery, branding • Portal management • Integration

  5. VP, Business Affairs VP, Enrollment Services VP, Advancement Provost Asst. VP, University Communications Director, IT Asst. Provost (Sabrina) Web Development Director, Portal Communications Member of Computer Governance Group

  6. Where are we now? • Functions / Applications / Services • Power shift – “what can mylasalle do for me?” and “what do you want to do? can mylasalle help?” • Customization – too much of a good thing? • Integration – still elusive in some areas • Processes / Workflow – not management, but culture shift • Content / Content Management – help!

  7. Challenges • Upper level buy-in • Platform stability & integration • A cautionary tale – La Salle’s PSP • Cautiously hopeful – the Alumni Portal

  8. Upper Level Buy-In • “Support” is very different from USE! • Lack of knowledge of possibilities limits vision • Accountability, assessment, ROI – why not? • Changes in business processes will be driven from this level • Presidential leadership is essential

  9. Platform Stability/Integration • Load issues – pre-registration • Password reset feature • SSO – library, WebCT, other services • LDIS – not really an answer? • CPIP – a viable alternative? • Email integration – don’t do it!

  10. La Salle’s PSP – a cautionary tale • Driving force – online May 2003 • +/- 1000 accounts created in first 8 months • Good yield on HS seniors who created PSP accounts • BUT…what happened? • Loss of interest from admissions • No dedicated staff person • Other pressing issues • Chicken and egg scenario

  11. Cautiously hopeful – Alumni Portal • Small, staged launch – fall 2004 • Employee/alums • Classes of 2000 and of 2004 • Marketing a priority • Dedicated staff person – communication with all staff and board members • Integration with Web for Alumni • Email for Life feature

  12. Beyond La Salle – What Now? What Next? • Campus Computing Project / Syllabus • 37.1% have portal in ’04 (28.4% in ’03) • 3rd of 8 in IT issues in higher ed • Similar issues across campuses • Generational shift…not just students, but administrators & faculty • ROI – when will we know? When will we care? • Change in business practices • BI, digital dashboards, assessments • Open Source?
