Staff Meeting Format • Purpose: Staff Time with Command Staff • This is the commander’s time with the staff and the staff’s time with the commander. • Use it wisely • Be prepared to get and give information • No briefings of items that apply only to field. Don’t waste the time of anyone with material that does not apply. • Formal briefing format for “information” – 5 minute stand up. Bullet points – short and to the point • Long range planning – 3 to 6 months out • Intra-Staff Coordination time and Cross-Talk • Staff work area time
Staff Officers “BE – KNOW – DO” • A Staff Officer is the Commander’s Subject Matter Expert • You must BE an Expert • You must KNOW your position and responsibilities • You must DO what needs to be done to accomplish the mission
Characteristics of a Staff Officer A good staff officer should possess and demonstrate— • Competence • Initiative and Judgment • Creativity • Flexibility • Confidence • Loyalty In addition, a good staff officer should be— • A team player • An effective manager • An effective communicator
Commanders Call Format • Purpose: Commanders’ Time • Wing, Group, Squadron, Flight • Topics • Wing Commander pass on info to subordinate CCs • Unit status briefings from Group/Sq/Flt CC**** • Needs, issues, coordination with Staff • From Unit CCs to Staff • Staff to Unit CCs • NO Unnecessary/Redundant Staff Briefings • If the Unit CCs need/want information they need to ask for it in advance so that the staff is prepared to respond **** EVERY UNIT MUST BE REPRESENTED BY CC OR REP WHO IS EMPOWERED TO MAKE BINDING DECISIONS
