MTAS Explained Naomi Tyrrell BMA WMS Rep 2005-2006
What the…? • Last year: one form, two routes: • MDAP (multideanery application process) online • Direct application to deanery • Now: one form, one route • MTAS (medical training application service) • Online • UK wide
So what? • MTAS used to apply for TWO YEAR foundation programme posts • UK wide: no ‘off scheme’ option • MTAS used for rest of your career, so get used to it!
Timeline • Confirm eligibility • 25th October • Register online with MTAS • Complete and submit application form • Can change form until 5th December • 5th December = DEADLINE • Website closes
Timeline • February 1st • Foundation school notification • March 29th • Notification of posts
The Form • 85 marks • 2 main components • Academic ranking: 45 marks • Short answer questions: 40 marks
Academic Component • Derived from the ranking quartile • 1st = 45 points • 2nd = 40 points • 3rd = 35 points • 4th = 30 points • Score sent to MTAS by medical school
Short answer questions • 40 marks • Probably 8 questions • Academically slanted • Scored out of 40 • Word limit = 150 • Exact scheme still under discussion • But: no points for staying at home!
What this really means… • Ranking: everyone gets 30 marks, thus… • Academic ranking = 27% • Short answer questions = 73% • Your contribution = 73%
References • Used as part of pre-employment checks by NHS employer • You name 2 referees, they contact them as necessary
The good news • More control over form than last year • Academic achievement given more weight • 16% to 27% • All UK graduates guaranteed an F1 post
