  4. The Sui Dynasty 589AD-618AD • Wendi reunified China • Creation of the Grand Canal • 1000 mile water way linked northern and southern China • Because of the massive building project of the Canal the Sui were overthrown.

  5. The Tang Dynasty 689AD-907AD • Expansion • Cultural Influence (art, wealth etc) • Contact with Japan • Much of this occurred under Taizong • Wu Zhao becomes the first and ONLY Chinese Empress • The Age of Buddhism

  6. The Song Dynasty 960AD-1279AD After the Tang dynasty china was not unified AGAIN! • Song Dynasty only ruled in the South • Scholar-Officials • Poets Du Fu and Li Bo • Porcelain • Pagodas • Gun Powder • Paper Money • Woodblock Printing

The Yuan Dynasty 1260AD-1368AD • Ruled by Kublai Khan (A Mongol, grandson of Genghis Khan) • Defeated and took over the Song Dynasty (the first time foreigners ruled all of China) • Mongols and Chinese lived apart • Increased Trade and prosperity • Marco Polo’s mission • Attempted invasions in Southwest Asia and Japan.
