Build Your Research Foundation Every great project Begins with a plan Joy Hansen Middlesex Community College Middletown, CT NELIG Winter Meeting – 12/2/2011
The Blueprint • When: Timing of instruction is everything. • Who: English 101 & other ‘L’ classes • Why: Students struggle with developing thesis statements, and planning & executing search strategies. • What: ACRL Standards One and Two Learning Outcomes
HOW: • Library Guides • Planning Worksheet • Model • Think-pair-share • Hands-on • Active Reading
Model Assignment: A 5-8 page argumentative/opinion-support style paper on a topic related to human rights.
MY TOPIC IDEA: Airport Security • WHAT DO I WANT TO KNOW: Are airport security measures such as full body scanners effective? • Discuss possible pitfalls in question development. • BRAINSTORM: What might a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer to this question look like?
My Response: • Tightened airport security measures such as full body scanners are ineffective, needlessly intrusive, and violate our human rights.
