Handshake Problem • The following lessons are addressing these standards: • Develop, analyze, and explain methods utilized to collect, organize, and describe data. (MO 1.1, 1.4,1.8, 2.1) • Apply patterns, relations, & functions to solving real-world problems.(MO1.6, 1.8, 3.3, 3.6) • Examine, predict, design, extend and describe patterns and relationships. (MO 1.6, 1.8, 2.1, 3.3)
The Handshake Problem • Let’s suppose you shook hands with everyone in this class. How many handshakes would there be? Act it out in your class, starting with one person and filling in the table on the next slide as you add people.

The Handshake Table • Did you see a pattern in the table after 10 people in class shook hands? • Copy at least two different patterns you found in the table in your journal. • Describe the pattern in words. • Can you predict the number of handshakes there might be for 20 people by using the pattern you found? • Click here for the answer!
