Hop Growing Cycle • Growing Hops from Rhizome to cone takes 120 days • All hop plants are perennial females that are used for production • Hop bines climb clockwise around lines • Trellis system should be facing north and south • Hops bur in June and develop into cones, which provides lupulin for brewers • Lupulin provides the alpha and beta acids for the beer (alpha = bitter, beta = aroma)

  9. One of the challenges of growing hops is the harvest. With the hops stripper, we no longer have to pick hops by hand.

  12. Is there a market for hops grown in Nebraska? You bet!! • There are currently six breweries in Lincoln: • Empyrean Brewing Co. (Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill) • Granite City Food & Brewery • Modern Monks (Misty’s Steakhouse & Brewery) • Blue Blood Brewing Co. • Zipline Brewing Co. • Ploghshare Brewing Co. • The market for locally grown products is in high demand.
