800-The “Medieval Warming Period” starts and last until 1315 or 1350. -The Vikings settle Greenland.-English farmers grow new grapes for wine. -Temperatures rise in Europe and farming does well. -The population on Europe swells.-Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans.-Alcuin of York works on corrected version of the Bible and compiles Lives of the Saints
801- Charlemagne conquers Barcelona from the Moors. 804- Charlemagne completes conquest and conversion of Saxony.
811- Tang emperor begins the issue of paper currency in China
814 -Charlemagne dies; Louis I (The Pious) succeeds. -Doge's Palace built in Venice.
825 -King Egbert of Wessex conquers Kent, Sussex, and Essex -Wessex becomes dominant power in England.
830 Einhard's Life of Charlemagne is published 833 Al-Mamun founds observatory in Baghdad
836- Vikings sack London 837- Carrier pigeon services established in Arab lands. 840- Louis the Pious dies and there is the Civil war in Frankish kingdom between his sons. 841- Vikings found Dublin in Ireland. 843- Treaty of Verdun permanently splits Charlemagne's empire. 845- Chinese government launches persecution of Buddhists. 850- Vikings seize Kiev which is the origin of the Varangian empire of Russia.
857- The Kingdom of Navarre is established in Spain. 859- The Arabs completed their conquest of Sicily. 862- Byzantine emperor Michael III sends Cyril and Methodius to convert Slavs and in addition to complete the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet. 871- Alfred the Great succeeds in Wessex.
872 - Ahmad ibn Talun establishes the first hospital in Cairo and consequently, hospitals are become common throughout the Arab world.
874- The Christians defeat the Moors at Orbedo which marks the beginning of the Reconquista within the Iberian Peninsula. 877- Charles II of France consolidates the feudal system. 880 – 911 – These years mark the high point of the Viking raids in Europe. 886- Alfred the Great expels the Vikings from London and establishes the Danelaw. 888- Charles III dies and the Frankish empire collapses resulting in the establishment of the Independent kingdom of Burgundy. 895- Magyars raid Bulgaria and settle in Central Europe.
900’s – This period marks the fall of the Mayan Classic period and thus cities are left deserted all over Mesoamerica. Woodblock printing of books begins in China, Japan, and Korea. This allows for increased printing and a more literate population. This is the approximate date for the establishment of the Toltec kingdom in Mexico.
907 - 960 - The era of the Five Dynasties in China; this era was marked by much warfare. Zhuwen(Chu Wen) murders the last Tang emperor of China and the beginning of the Period of The Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms begins.
909- Said ibn Hussein establishes Fatimid caliphate in Tunis. The abbey of Cluny is founded in eastern France.
911- Norman noble Rollo converts and pays homage to Charles III of France and the Duchy of Normandy originates. 912- Abdar-Rahman III succeeds in Umayyad Spain and brings Islamic Spain to the peak of its power and cultural influence. 930- Althing is established in Iceland and the Early representative assembly is held in Europe. 932- Wood-block printing in China becomes more prevalent and allows for the spread of information and pushes for a larger realm of literacy. 939- Ngo Quyen defeats the Chinese army and establishes an independent kingdom in northern Vietnam. 942- Edmund I of England conquers the Danelaw 945 - Buyids occupy Baghdad.
947 – The Khitan establish the Liao Dynasty to rule northern China and Manchuria. 950 – The foundation of the Kievan state. 950 – Death of Al-Farabi.
954 – King Edred seizes York and unites all of England. 955 – Otta I of Germany defeats Magyar army at the battle of Lechfeld. 956 – The Oghuz Turks, led by Seljuk, move into Transoxiana. 960 – Zhao Kuangyin founds the Song Dynasty in China.
962 – Otto I is crowned the Holy Roman emperor by Pope John XII, and this marks the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire.
966 – King Mieszko of Poland converts to Catholicism. 969 – Fatimids conquer Egypt and moves its capital to Cairo. 982 – Eric the Red begins the Viking invasion of Iceland. 983 – Ahmad ibnBuwayhAsud ad-Dawla rises to power in Persia and reintroduces the ancient title of Shahanshah (King of Kings). 984 – Earliest known astrolabe, a tool for navigation, is put into use in Persia.
987 – Hugh Capet founds the Capetian royal line in France. 988 – Vladimir the Great of Kiev converts to Christianity. This year also marks the foundation of the Russian Orthodox Church.
993 – Pope John XV canonizes Ulric, the bishop of Augsburg. This is also the first documented papal canonization. 999 – Gerbert becomes Pope Sylvester II and writes about “Arabic” numerals. Unfortunately, the new numbering system did not take hold in Europe until the 14th century.
1000 - 1200 – This period is marked by the Romanesque style in both architecture and art. 1000 - 1200 – Development of neo-Confucianism. 1000 - 1500 – Muslim invasion of India. 1000 - 1500 – Consolidation of states in Africa.
