  3. Plan Your Attack! How to prepare for college while in high school:

  4. College • Do your research (regarding the best fit college for you and your chosen career) • Apply as soon as possible - the earlier the better(usually can’t apply until the summer before your senior year) • FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS • Apply online (if possible)

  5. What should I do Sophomore Year? • Get involved! • Work on your academics • Start thinking about potential colleges • Take the PSAT (provided by CSHS) to get an idea of your strengths and weaknesses for the SAT • Use collegeboard.org – click on “my college quickstart” for more feedback • (planning calendars are also available here)

  6. What should I do Junior Year? • Prepare for PSAT in October • Visit College Fair (usually early October) and begin planning college visits • Plan/study for possibility of taking ACT or SAT in spring (check registration deadlines!) • Continue to narrow and refine your list of colleges • Make plans for summer activities – work, community service, etc.

What about summer before Senior Year- yes, there are things to be done!- • Make plans to take ACT or SAT again if necessary • Work/community service as planned • Continue to visit potential colleges • Finalize list of colleges you will apply to • Begin working on applications as they become available – usually after August 1st.

  8. What should I do Senior Year? • Take ACT/SAT if necessary • Make additional college visits as necessary • Complete applications as early as possible • Consider time needed to collect recommendation letters and transcripts • Consider benefits of Early Decision for first choice college

Have a back up plan • Think about cost, location etc. • Research colleges and narrow your choices • www.cappex.com • www.mychances.net • Two sources that will provide you with feedback about your chance of getting admitted to particular colleges • Also provide information about college life, financial aid opportunities, etc.

College Applications • Your list of colleges should include: • Above and beyond – your chance of admission is less than 50/50 • Target – your chance of admission is good • Likely – you are confident that you will be admitted • Applications: - Texas Common Application www.applytexas.org - The Common Application www.commonapp.org - Individual College Applications

  12. Use your resources Counseling office/College Center: • information regarding SAT, ACT, THEA tests • Transcripts ($2.00 each) • College Catalogs, financial aid info, computer access, books about colleges • Recommendations Hours 7:45 - 4:30 M-Th, 7:45 – 4:00 on Fri.

  13. Know your deadlines • Be sure to check these carefully! • The earlier the better - your application has a chance to stand out • Consider early decision • BE AWARE OF THE DECEMBER 1st DEADLINE FOR MAJOR COLLEGES

  14. Application Essays • Take it seriously • Follow directions exactly on length • Make sure you answered the question • Brag about accomplishments, share any hardships or difficulties, be creative/original • There is no such thing as an optional essay!

  15. High School is Important! • Having a great SAT/ACT is good but, colleges look at the whole student: • school achievement • test scores • recommendations • college essay • extracurricular activities & community service • leadership positions especially important • Interview (when applicable)

  16. Community College & Technical School • Do your research • Be familiar with application process and deadlines • Do you need to take the THEA, SAT or ACT?

Visit Schools • Demonstrate interest in the college by visiting and discover your “fit”: • Get forms from the attendance office • Make an appointment with an admission counselor at the school you choose to visit • Present document along with parent note upon return to CSHS attendance office • Juniors may take 1 college day, Seniors may take 2

  18. Money for college • Complete FAFSA as early as possible after January 1st. Deadline for completion is March 31st. • Use college financial aide office • Use web resources

  19. Scholarships • Local Scholarships will be listed as we receive them. Check CSHS website for updates (senior year) • Some scholarships come directly from the college you will be attending • Never pay for information about scholarships – information is free and can be easily researched on the web • Searching and applying for scholarships takes time • You’ll never know if you have a chance to win a scholarship unless you apply

ACT/SAT • College Station High School Code is 441401 • Read instruction book for SAT or ACT carefully and do the sample test • Register online: • SAT – collegeboard.org • ACT – actstudent.org • SAT Subject test sometimes required • THEA-required for many Jr. Colleges • Must take or be exempt • Colleges set their own exemption standards. So check with the college
