  5. Connotation • the meaningsuggested by the word -emotional reaction, what the word make you feel when you hear it?

  6. Connotation Examples • -stink • -obsessed • -mansion • -experienced • -cheap

  7. I can’t tell you how sorry I am for this… • As a class, lets work through this ORGANIZER (I know what it really is but be nice and go along with me) • Write down what we come up with and SAVE this sheet b/c it might help you later

  8. Now that that is over • Something fun….I hope • Keep connotation and denotation in mind when you do this!!!

  9. NOW GO ALONG WITH ME • 1) Keep your feet under your desk…DON’T LOOK AT THEM!!!!! • 2) Take out a piece of paper(DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME ON IT!) • 3) I am now going to count you off…as I come by your desk, write the number I give you on the top of your paper

  10. ARE you sticking with me? • 4) Now that you have your number, write a DETAILED description of your left shoe • REMEMBER: I asked you NOT to look at your shoe….keep it out of sight!!! TIP: Include as many details as possible and as specific as you can • 10 minutes

  11. GIMME gimmegimme • 5)Place your sticky note on the bottom of your shoe (do not write anything on it) • 6) Pass your papers to the front of the room

  12. Hope this doesn’t stink (Ha, I’m punny) • 7) Take off your left shoe and put it on your desk • 8) Affix the sticky note to the bottom of the shoe…your number is a secret

Who wants to be a shoe salesman when they grow up??? • 9) I need a volunteer from each row to collect the shoes and PLACE them, sole down, in the middle of the room…Lets make the most fetid salad ever made, We’ll call it CV left shoe salad • 10) I will now pass the descriptions back out…you will not receive the one you wrote (hopefully)

  14. Read up brothers and sisters • 11) Read the description you have received. I hope you got a good one (or maybe a less smelly one). • 12) As a group (by rows) share your descriptions and try to decide which shoes match up to your group’s descriptions

  15. HERE WE GO • 13) Shift through the salad, and find the shoes you think match your description • 14) Write the number that is on your description on the sticky note

  16. Test those hypothesizes • 15) Lets read a few that we are pretty sure of. • 16) Lets read a few that we aren’t so sure of. • 17) Get your shoes back

  17. Lets Mullet over • 18) What characteristics of the successful descriptions made them so and what characteristics of the unsuccessful made them so?

  18. What was this for anyway?! • When you write about a memory (memoir) you wont have the ability to touch it or look directly at it. You have to pull out the details that you remember. • Memory plays an important role in generating specific details that will make a past experience come ALIVE for readers (college entrance folks)

  19. You might notice… • Pictures hung up around the room…. • 1) Find one that you might like to write about and pull a desk up

  20. More group junk • 2) As a group, generate some words that might appear in a story contained in your picture (setting)

  21. Continued • Sensory detail is the cornerstone of this kind of writing. (remember connotative words that describe senory details will convey your tone!!) • 3) As an individual, imagine you are in this setting….jot down a list of words that might describe what you are smelling, hearing, feeling, seeing, and tasting. Keep these words ACTIVE!

  22. 4) Share with your group • 5) On the same piece of paper you used to come up with the descriptive list, describe the setting using your word bank. • You want the reader to feel what you are feeling • Vivid, precise verbs are a must!
