A Hierarchy of Questions to Consider When Planning Curricular Accommodations and Modifications
Accommodations As Is: Students are involved in the same lesson as other students with the same objectives and using the same materials. 1. Can the student actively and meaningfully participate in the lessons with no changes?
Accommodations Environmental Accommodations: Minor changes to the environments that do not involve changes to the curriculum, instruction, or materials. • Can the student’s participation in the lesson be increased by changes in the classroom environment? Student’s location in the room Overall room environment
Accommodations Change in instruction: Changes in the format of the lesson that DO NOT change the content or the curriculum. • Can the student’s participation be increased by changing the organization of the students? Peer partners Small groups Your ideas
Accommodations • Can the student’s participation be increased by changing the lesson format? Simulations/role plays Activity-based instruction Games Your ideas
Accommodations • Can the student’s participation be increased by using cooperative learning? Jigsaw Literature circles Your ideas?
Accommodations Level of Support: Using peers (same or cross age) or adults to support the student. 6. Can the student’s participation be increased by changing the support structure? Peer buddies Same or cross-age peer tutoring Teacher support (general educator, special educator) Related service provider Paraprofessional Your ideas?
Accommodations Timing: Changes in the length of time required to complete a given task. • Can the student’s participation be increased by changing the demands of the task? Adjust pacing Individualized time line Your ideas?
Accommodations Input: Changes made to how the material/curriculum is presented to the student • Can the student’s participation be increased by changing how the task is accomplished? Note taking adaptations Manipulatives Assistive technology Your ideas?
Accommodations Output: Changes made to how the student participates in the lesson. • Can the student’s participation in the lesson be increased by changing how the student responds to instruction? Note taking adaptations Manipulatives Assistive Technology Your ideas?
Modifications Difficulty: Changes made that impact the curriculum or what the student will need to learn. 10. Can the student’s participation be increased by adapting the skill level, problem type, or how the student may approach the work? Reduce number or complexity of terms in a unit Allow the use of a calculator Allow the use of a spell checker for written assignments (where spelling is considered in grading) Your ideas?
Modifications Multilevel Curriculum: Students work in same subject area, but work at different levels of the curriculum. 11. Can the student’s access to the general education curriculum be increased by working on a different level in the same subject area? Reading the same book on a lower grade level Working on a lower math level In social studies, expecting a student to be able to locate just the states while others learn to locate capitals as well Your ideas?
Modifications Overlapping Curriculum: Students are involved in the same activity with other students but may have a goal from a different curricular area. 12. Can the student participate in the lesson by focusing on an embedded skill area such as a communication, motor, or social development? Modifications Partial Participation: Student will participate in some meaningful way in the lesson, but not be expected to participate in the entire lesson. 14. Can the student participate in some meaningful way, but not be expected to participate in the entire lesson? In geography, have student hold globe, while others point out locations Have students collect or distribute materials Your ideas?
Location 15. If most students are involved in an activity that isn’t relevant for the student AFTER all appropriate accommodations and modifications have been considered, can the student be working on an activity that is related to his or her educational priorities (IEP goals and objectives)… In the classroom? In another general education environment? In a special education or therapy environment? In another part of the school building? In the community? Your ideas?
