  1. Overview Issues Panel: Clean Energy for California Farmers and Food ProcessorsThe State of Clean Energy and Two Models for Viewing Clean Energy Investments Patsy Dugger Manager, Agriculture and Food Processing Programs Pacific Gas and Electric Company November 5th, 2008

  2. Opening Comments: • What is clean energy? • State of Clean Energy in CA and Current Barriers • Two Models for Viewing Clean Energy Investments • 1) Integrated Energy Management Pyramid and PG&E’s Corresponding Programs • 2) Continuous Energy Improvement – A customer approach to smart strategic energy planning for long term benefits • How to get more information about PG&E’s Clean Energy Services

  3. What is Clean Energy? • Clean Energy is… • Demand Side Management (i.e., reducing energy needs through conservation & efficiency, improved maintenance, demand response, etc.) • Supply Side Solutions (solar, biogas, wind self gen or PPA, waste heat recovery to offset fuel purchases, CHP) • Carbon Offset Programs (like Climate Smart) to reduce carbon footprint, or to generate extra revenue for the farm • Even Water reduction! • Delivered by… • Utilities, Consultants, ESCOs, & Trade Allies who leverage utility programs • City, Regional, State and Government Partnerships • Partners like the Great Valley Center & SJVCEO • Supported by: • Technical Support • Utility / State / Federal / Local Incentives • Loans • Venture Capital

  4. 14,000 12,000 10,000 8,000 KWh 6,000 4,000 2,000 - 1960 1965 1970 1975 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000 US CA Western Europe State of Clean Energy in CA • The state of clean energy in CA is very strong! • After 30 years of successful EE programs per capita electricity consumption in California has remained flat • CA is operating the largest, most diverse portfolio of programs in the world for both demand and supply side. • Rising conventional energy costs paired with incentives and make investments increasingly attractive

  5. State of Clean Energy in CA • Energy Action Plan (EAP) Established a Preferred Energy Loading Order: • Commited CA to getting all cost effective energy efficiency, distributed generation and demand response before building new conventional generation • California Long-Term Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan: Released 9/08; A collaborative process initiated by the CPUC that set forth a statewide roadmap to maximize energy efficiency in CA through 2020 and coordinate with other state efforts such as AB32.

  6. Model 1. PG&E’s Integrated Energy Management Pyramid

  7. PG&E’s Integrated Programs • Analysis • Online tools: Analyze Energy, Get a Rate Analysis, Calculate Carbon Footprint • Request an onsite Energy Audit • Benchmark your Energy Use against yourself or peers • Assess your energy management practices • Conservation & Energy Efficiency • Tech Support, Rebates & Incentives for Retrofit, New Construction, Retro-Commissioning • Direct Install programs, Point of Purchase discounts, Mid-Stream vendor incentives, Manufacturer Programs, Codes and Standards raise the bar, Emerging Technologies feeds the innovation pipeline. • Extensive free education and training programs

  8. PG&E’s Integrated Programs • TOU Management and Demand Response (DR) • TOU rates encourage load management and optimization to reduce on-peak useage • DR Technical Assistance & Equipment Incentives can pay for load control systems • Incentives and rate reductions for participating in DR events • Distributed Generation / Renewables • CA Solar Initiative incentives • Self-Gen Incentive Program for Wind, Fuel Cells • Power Purchase Agreements – for small renewables projects that want to sell back to the grid • Biogas Injection for dairies and food processors • ClimateSmart GHG offset Program • Offset your energy-related carbon footprint • OR Earn money by selling your carbon credits (i.e., captured biogas) to PG&E or another interested buyer

  9. Model 2: “Continuous Energy Improvement” Customer Strategic Energy Planning:

  10. Benefits of a Continuous Improvement Approach • Use a comprehensive assessment to identify technical and operational opportunities • Develop a clear, comprehensive and integrated company/community strategic energy plan supported from the top down • Create a prioritized action plan for the next 6 months, 2 years, 5 years… • Measure performance improvements with Key Performance Indicators (i.e., kwh/unit of product) • Engage employees with awareness and education. • Develop energy champions and energy teams to support projects

  11. How to get more information on PG&E’s Clean Energy Solutions for Valley Farmers • Attend Sessions on: • Energy Efficiency Policy Perspectives on 11/5 • The convergence of energy goals and regulatory compliance challenges for farmers • Energy Management case studies on 11/6 • Details on PG&E’s ag programs, Farm Bill Financing, DR for agriculture, and a project case study • Biogas Panel on 11/6 • Find out how you can sell biogas to PG&E • Visit the PG&E Booth • Comprehensive materials, staff to answer questions and connect you with resources, and get a cow! • 3. Customers can contact their PG&E Account Rep or get your rep by calling (800) 468-4743 Bus Customer Service Center
