Five Themes of Geography Place and Movement
A world in motion • Working with your group list and categorize reasons why (the causes) and how (the ways) people, animals, products/resources and ideas/information move • Create a chart with these four headings: people, animals, products/resources and ideas. • List your suggestions for why and how beneath each heading • In some cases, you may use the same reason in more than one category • Poverty is high in Cuba, people come to North America via ships • A new band places their music on youtube, everyone is now listening to them
A world in motion • Humans interact with each other as well as many places and things almost every day. We travel from place to place; we communicate with each other in many different ways; and we depend on products, information, and ideas that come from outside our own environments. • MOVEMENT explores where different resources are located, the people that use them, and how they are transported to locations all over the earth’s surface. • The theme of MOVEMENT helps us understand how we connect with, and depend on, other regions, cultures, and people in the world.
A world in motion • Movement takes “things” from one place to another • It is one of the five themes • Movement – the flow of people, products, information, and elements of nature
A world in motion • religious persecution • retirement • education • safer life • war • job opportunities • commercial links such as trade and business • need for resources or food, • natural disasters such as floods or volcanoes • music • internet • fashion • film • television
A world in motion This web shows the four aforementioned types of movement Can you identify all the elements? People Products Information Elements of nature
A world in motion Geographers look at movement in two ways Systems – a pattern of routes that connect places together E.g., highways, internet, rivers
A world in motion • Geographers look at movement in two ways • Flow – measures the volume of people, products, information, and other things moving along a system • E.g., planners measure traffic flow to decide where more lanes of traffic are needed
Moving People • Brampton is a large city, and many people use automobiles to move about – to and from work, shopping, entertainment etc.. What does this lead to? • About 2/3 of those who work in Toronto drive to work • Less than ¼ use public transit (public transit?) • In many parts of the world these fractions are reversed (meaning?) • Why might this be? • How else could you move yourself about your city? Work? • What is your view on public transportation? With your table discuss whether public transportation is faster, cheaper, safer, or more convenient than driving. • Which method is better for people? For the environment? For natural resources?
Moving Products • Trucks • Trains • Ships • Movement of products connects places to one another • Airplanes carry cargo • Energy flows through oil and gas pipelines, and power lines • How else might freight be transported?
Place\Location and movement • How are place and location related to movement? • Movement of people? • Movement of goods? • How would the themes of place/location and movement be useful in the real world? • Vacation? • Work? • Live?
