ABSOLUTE LOCATION • The exact place on earth where a geographic feature is found • Address • Latitude & Longitude Coordinates
LONGITUDE Imaginary lines that travel around the earth through the poles. Prime meridian marks 0° longitude and marks the east and west hemispheres.
LATITUDE Set of imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator. Marks north and south hemisphere.
RELATIVE LOCATION • Describes a location in relation to its surrounding environment • Familiar landforms • Across from, next to, around the corner from…
PLACE • Answers question “What’s it like there?” • Can change over time
HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS Includes culture, religion, language, government, population, etc…
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS Includes things like climate, landforms, vegetation, wildlife, etc…
REGION • Answers the question “How are places similar or different?” • Regions usually have more than one characteristic that unifies them. • May include physical, political, economic or cultural characteristics.
FORMAL REGIONS • Uniform characteristic shared • Definite boundary • Examples: • Sahara Desert • Texas • Africa
FUNCTIONAL REGION • Characteristics not quite as uniform, but is focused on central point (a hub). • Organized around a set of interactions and connections • Example: • City & its suburbs • Greater Houston area
PERCEPTUAL REGION • Media generated region defined by common perceptions • No clear boundary • Examples • American Midwest • Tornado Alley • Silicon Valley
MOVEMENT • Answers the question “How do people, goods and ideas move from one location to another?”

HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION (HEI) • Answers the question “How do people relate to the physical world?” • Can sometimes create problems
USE ENVIRONMENT Examples include swimming in a lake, breathing air, drilling for oil
MODIFY ENVIRONMENT Examples include building roads and homes, farming, building dam
ADAPT TO ENVIRONMENT Examples include clothing, umbrella, build house on stilts, air conditioning
