  3. LOCATION • Answers the question “Where is it?” • Absolute location • Relative location

  4. ABSOLUTE LOCATION • The exact place on earth where a geographic feature is found • Address • Latitude & Longitude Coordinates

  5. LONGITUDE Imaginary lines that travel around the earth through the poles. Prime meridian marks 0° longitude and marks the east and west hemispheres.

  6. LATITUDE Set of imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator. Marks north and south hemisphere.

  7. RELATIVE LOCATION • Describes a location in relation to its surrounding environment • Familiar landforms • Across from, next to, around the corner from…

  8. PLACE • Answers question “What’s it like there?” • Can change over time

  9. HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS Includes culture, religion, language, government, population, etc…

  10. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS Includes things like climate, landforms, vegetation, wildlife, etc…

  11. REGION • Answers the question “How are places similar or different?” • Regions usually have more than one characteristic that unifies them. • May include physical, political, economic or cultural characteristics.

  12. FORMAL REGIONS • Uniform characteristic shared • Definite boundary • Examples: • Sahara Desert • Texas • Africa

  13. FUNCTIONAL REGION • Characteristics not quite as uniform, but is focused on central point (a hub). • Organized around a set of interactions and connections • Example: • City & its suburbs • Greater Houston area

  14. PERCEPTUAL REGION • Media generated region defined by common perceptions • No clear boundary • Examples • American Midwest • Tornado Alley • Silicon Valley

  15. MOVEMENT • Answers the question “How do people, goods and ideas move from one location to another?”

  16. MOVE PEOPLE By railroad, highway, subway, plane, car and much, much more

  17. MOVE GOODS By ships, trains, roads, 18 wheelers and more!

  18. MOVE IDEAS By TV, radio, internet, newspaper, books

  19. HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION (HEI) • Answers the question “How do people relate to the physical world?” • Can sometimes create problems

  20. USE ENVIRONMENT Examples include swimming in a lake, breathing air, drilling for oil

  21. MODIFY ENVIRONMENT Examples include building roads and homes, farming, building dam

  22. ADAPT TO ENVIRONMENT Examples include clothing, umbrella, build house on stilts, air conditioning
