Leader Post Article – Jan 14 and 15, 2014 • The first is a report on graduation rates of students. The stats are for how many students graduate in 3 years – that is once entering Grade 10. • What are your thoughts about the report – what do the stats tell you and other readers of the paper? • How does the editorial (Jan. 15, 2014) connect with the report from the day before? • How might these concerns affect your teaching in the future?
Assessment and Evaluation • Yesterday some of you mentioned objective assessment – what is meant by objective assessment? • What is subjective assessment? Do you think of it as better or worse than objective assessment? • What do objective and subjective mean in terms of assessment and evaluation? • What are you going to aim for when you create assessments for your classes?
Jargon in the Game • Assessment, evaluation, assessment for learning, assessment of learning, valid, reliable, scaffolding, constructivism, knowledge, feedback, summative assessment, formative assessment, metacognition, discover, mistakes, mistakes for learning, norm-referenced assessment, criterion-referenced assessment, metacognition • Talk about your understanding of these words and keep some notes to discuss with the class.
The Research Paper • The assignment is to write about an issue in assessment in about 4-6 pages. • Include at least 7 references. What counts as a reference? What are poor references? Do you keep an annotated bibliography of what you read? You should! (See WORD function for citations and references.) • Citations and referencing – questions? How do you do it? What is APA? • Post your choice of topic on the Wiki page by Monday, January 27. Feel free to consult with me about your topic or how to make it work for this essay. • If you have additional question, do hesitate to raise them in class or contact me by email.
Davis Book – what did you learn? • Chapter One – Making Classroom Assessment Work • “As event is not an experience until you reflect upon it.” Michael Fullan • What are your thoughts about this chapter?
Next Week • Read Chapters 2 and 3 – be prepared to talk about them in class. • Some questions: • Mistakes in learning – what do we mean? • “He who takes the wrong road must make his journey twice over.” Spanish proverb. (What do you think?) • What ideas in the chapters were interesting to you.
