Welcome to ECS 410 January 7, 2012
Information Overload? • What do we expect of you as a teacher? • Distraught teacher
Why is this class important? • If you do assessment right, it will help you plan and be organized in what and how you teach. • It’s one of the most complex aspects of teaching. • It’s ever-changing. • It will help everyone have confidence in you. • It provides students with valuable information.
Today’s agenda: • Course Outline explained • What’s in an assessment portfolio? • Assign class readings from Gullo and Davies • Discuss what is accountability and who are we accountable to? • First in class assignment
Let’s look at the syllabus • UR Courses • I use for posting power points and assignments • I also use this for contacting students via email. • Wiki • http://assessment410.wikispaces.com/home
Assignment #1 • Assessment Portfolio – 40% • This in an ongoing project through your internship and beyond in which you will create a portfolio that consists of specific assessment samples and responsive journal entries. This will be an in-class assignment for the most part. We will be doing tasks and activities during our classes where you will be designing assessments, responding to readings and topics, and making curriculum connections. • Within your portfolio, you will have the opportunity to create a mini unit in which you will link an outcome with an effective assessment tool you will create. • You will be given directions each class about what entries to make in your portfolio to submit the beginning of February. When complete, your portfolio should be something that you can add to and take to a future interview. • Due: Monday, February 4th
Portfolios - a closer look • Use a binder or folder of some kind • What will be in there? • Classroom responses and assignments • a mini unit in which you will link an outcome with an effective assessment tool you will create. • Samples of assessments/rubrics • You will add information during internship and other experiences
Mini Unit * Choose outcome from the Language Arts curriculum in which you will begin the process of matching indicators and assessment tools • Indicator – Set – Content – Closure – Assessment • You will require 3 lessons with 3 different types of assessments • Wait until we make it through most of the two books and information.
Look at the Rubric • Emphasis in three areas: • Reader responses/in class assignments • Mini unit assessments • Organization and other assessment samples and elements QUESTIONS?
Readings from Gullo and Davies • Every person will take a chapter • We will go through the books at lightning speed without a lot of endless reading for you… one chapter and your in-class responses • You are responsible for finishing and having each response in your portfolio. • Refer to the course outline to make sure you have your date to summarize your chapter • Three chapters per class will be presented. • We will get the main points together and then you will do a response or assignment right in class to be included in your portfolio • Of course you can refer to your text as well as the summary.
What to include in your summary: • Highlighting specific quotes we can underline • A summary using key points • Any questions or places you wondered about? • 10 minutes max. (will be timed) • Can include handouts, power points, any other visuals (can be posted on wiki) • Will go towards your participation mark
Choose chapters • Pick from a hat • Some have you picking a partner because of early presentations or complex ones • May trade if you wish • Sign hand out sheet
Humour break • How NOT to do assessment • Do you know? • Stand up • find two other people who have a birthday the same month as you • give them a high five • Run up and get a morning treat and return to your seat
Thoughts to begin…. • What do you know about assessment? • What is accountability? • Who do you think we should be accountable to? • Students, parents • Ourselves • Administration, ministry
Talk at your tables about what are some elements of importance within your assessment we need to be aware of. • Writing ability, including spelling and grammar • Wording, wording, wording • Ways to share • Criteria that reflects the elements of the indicator • Consistency with grade partners
In class assignment • Find a partner or two • Discuss one personal experience with assessment that happened to you that was unfair or made you feel unhappy • Discuss what are the qualities of a teacher who was in your opinion, a good assessor. • Write a journal entry – 1-2 paragraphs about your conversation • TITLE IT: Beginning Experiences
