In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus Attends the Feast of Tabernacles July 3, 2011 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
To The Feast ... • John 7:10-13 • 10But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?” 12There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” 13Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • We talked last week about Jesus’ reasons for delaying his trip to Jerusalem • There would have been a caravan of significant size traveling from Galilee • Jesus chose to travel alone • When He arrived, the people in Jerusalem were already talking about him • Note the parties involved: • The Jews • The crowds www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
In The Temple • John 7:14-15 • 14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. 15The Jews then were astonished, saying, “Howhasthis manbecomelearned, having neverbeeneducated?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
How Ironic ... • Do you see the irony here? • The Jews are talking about this uneducated Galilean • Rabbis went through lengthy formal training, as Paul did with Gamaliel • Unlike the Greek world, originality in Jewish thought was not appreciated • Yet the one speaking is the Incarnate Logos www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Jesus’ Teaching • John 7:14-18 • 16SoJesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17Ifanyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whetherI speak from Myself. 18Hewho speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Those who are truly seeking God will know that Jesus’ words are true • Those who speak to bring glory to others are obvious, as are those who speak to bring glory to themselves • Everything that Jesus does and says is to bring glory to His Father www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
The Law • John 7:19 • 19“Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” • There was great pride among the Jews that they were the nation chosen to receive the Law • Jesus takes them to task because they don’t keep it • Paul tells us that it’s not possible www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
He Has a Demon! • John 7:20-24 • 20Thecrowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21Jesusanswered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel. 22Forthis reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23Ifa man receives circumcision on theSabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on theSabbath? 24Donot judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”` www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Why would the crowd think Jesus has a demon? • What event is Jesus referring to here? • Jesus draws a distinction between keeping the Law to the last detail, versus keeping the spirit of the Law • The Jews perform circumcision on the Sabbath to keep the Law • Jesus healed on the Sabbath to make the whole man well www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Is He the Christ? • John 7:25-27 • 25So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they? 27However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • A third group is referenced here • The people of Jerusalem • The Jews • The crowd • The people are saying: “The rulers haven’t stooped Jesus from teaching. Do you suppose that they have determined that He is the Christ?” • Is it a true statement that no one knows where the Christ is from? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Jesus’ Response • John 7:28-31 • 28Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29Iknow Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.” 30So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Note that Jesus cries out in the Temple • Would have caused a stir • He is not holding back • Why did the Jews want to seize Him? • Note the dissention in the crowd • Some were offended • Some believed • Likely some were undecided • Kinda like today ... www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Where I Go ... • John 7:32-34 • 32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him. 33Therefore Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me. 34Youwill seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Where Is He Going? • John 7:35-36 • 35The Jews then said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? 36Whatis this statement that He said, ‘You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • The people obviously don’t understand Jesus’ statement here • His Disciples had a hard enough time with it themselves • The people begin wondering if he is heading off into the Diaspora to teach the Greeks • Interesting that this is exactly the model that the early church – Paul, most notably – used to spread the Gospel www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Come to Me and Drink • John 7:37-39 • 37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38Hewho believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • The Feast of Tabernacles was intended to remind the Nation of Israel of the wanderings in the desert • There was a great emphasis during the feast on water, to remind them of the Lord’s provision of water from the rock • Water was brought each day from the Pool of Siloam and poured on the altar • Except on the last day of the feast ... www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Who Is This Man? • John 7:40-44 • 40Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” 41Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42Hasnot the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Question ... • How many Philippine Army Field Marshalls were born in Little Rock, Arkansas? • How about US Army Five-Star Generals? • Where a man appears to be from does not always reflect his birthplace www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
No One Ever Spoke ... • John 7:45-49 • 44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 45Theofficers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” 47The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you? 48Noone of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49Butthis crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Nicodemus • John 7:50-52 • 50Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said* to them, 51“Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52They answered him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
In Summary • Jesus has begun teaching publicly in Jerusalem • The opposition to His Message and his person is increasing • The crowds are conflicted as to who He might be • The Year of Opposition www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
