Czar (Tsar) Ivan IV (The Terrible) 1530-1584 Good (1547-1563) Bad (1560’s-until death) His wife's death led him to be suspicious of his close advisors Created a 6,000 man police force who killed anyone who opposed Ivan’s authority Took land from 12,000 boyars and killed thousands in the city of Novgorod who he suspected of trying to separate from Russia Accidently killed his own son, leaving no heir to the throne • He reduced the boyars (landowners) power by: • Creating a council that included lower-level nobles and merchants • Promote based on merit rather than status • Created a new legal code • Expanded Russia’s borders

Peter the Great (1672-1725) History Reforms Modernized the army, industry and schools Brought the church under his rule Created the first newspaper Forced boyars to cut their beards or pay a tax Acquired a warm water port city, naming it St. Petersburg • Known throughout history for having a big heart, a big personality and for being over 6 feet tall. • Secretly visited western European cities to learn about how to modernize Russia • Reading

Catherine the Great • Married Peter the Great’s grandson, Czar Peter III. • With the help of powerful boyars she overthrew him to become Czarina of Russia • Reforms: • Transformed the education system (included girls) • Updated the legal system • Made trade easier • Reorganized local governments
