  2. THE MISSION “To deliver scientifically valid, accurate and timely information through an efficient system designed to facilitate better and more informed decision making with the vision to achieve the desired goals of sustainable development in Belize”

BACKGROUND • The initiative evolved from the mandate of the MNRE which is “to improve the quality of life for all Belizeans by effectively managing and conserving the natural and environmental resources in order to improve the sustainable development of Belize.” • At the regional level, NEGIS has its roots from the Central-American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) as instructed by the Central American Alliance for Sustainable Development (ALIDES). Under this program the Government is committed to develop such a system.

NEGIS OBJECTIVES • Serve as the national and central repository for environmental and geographic information through a coordinated partnership with all stakeholders; • Provide a database on environmental and geographic information to facilitate decision-making, planning and management of natural resources, as well as to promote education and awareness, based on scientific validity and timeliness; • Provide a cost-effective and efficient system for data collection and information sharing; • Strengthen coordination and collaboration among government departments, NGO’s, private agencies and academia among many others to reduce duplication of efforts; • Provide a gateway system for knowledge transfer and capacity building through the development of a web-based forum; • Address issues related to accuracy, data standards and protocols; • Develop a framework that is compatible with regional and global systems.

NEGIS BENEFITS TO PARTNER INSTITUTIONS • Instant and easy access to up-to-date environmental information, i.e. a one-stop shopping for environmental information, to facilitate decision-making and comprehensive environmental analysis; • Cooperative and improved governance; • Reduced data collection costs and duplication of efforts and closing of data gaps; • Shared data collection costs mean more resources for members; • Reduce pressures from bulky data requests, i.e. more human resources to deal with priority issues other than tending to data requests; • Shared experiences; • A medium through which members can post information; • Data storage warehouse through which institutions without a server can store data; • Access to ALL regional data available through SIAM (SERVIR).
