  1. Intro to Fluids

  2. What is a fluid? Can be poured No fixed shape Gases and liquids

  3. Is cornstarch and water a fluid? Cornstarch and water creates a substance with solid properties when force is applied and liquid properties when no force is applied. This is called an oobleck and is classified as a non-newtonian fluid.

  4. Is cornstarch and water a fluid? • Cornstarch on a Speaker • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zoTKXXNQIU • Mythbusters Walk on Water • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GWhOLorDtw

  5. Particle Theory of Matter • All matter is made of tiny particles; differentsubstances are made of different particles • The particles in matter are bonded to one another 3) Particles of matter are always moving and vibrating 4) Particles have spaces between them; these spaces are different in solids, liquids and gases

  6. Particle Theory of Matter

  7. 3 Properties of Fluids • Viscosity - Liquid’s internal resistance or friction that keeps it from flowing - Fluids with high viscosity don’t flow as well

  8. 3 Properties of Fluids 3 Properties of Fluids 2) Density - Amount of matter or number of particles in a given volume

  9. 3 Properties of Fluids 3 Properties of Fluids 3) Buoyancy - Force exerted by a liquid against gravity (floating force)

  10. Quiz Quiz 1) This fluid circulates throughout our body delivering oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. 2) This fluid is a gas that could be used as a fire extinguisher 3) Name one fluid that has a higher viscosity than water. 4) This is an example of a non-newtonian fluid 5) This fluid makes up 60 to 70% of our entire body mass 6) This is one type of fluid that keeps our vehicle operating efficiently 7) This fluid is used to operate the buckets of tractors or the implements pulled behind. 8) Name one highly flammable fluid 9) Name one fluid that you have encountered today
