Viral Structure • Have viral genome of DNA/RNA (ss/ds) • Viral genome is surrounded by capsid. • Capsid is protein coat. • Coat consists of 1 or >1 types of protein subunits arranged into rod-like/polyhedral shape. • Coat protein - protects the viral genetic material during the journey to a new host cell. • Some have additional structural features, such as the envelope of animal viruses or the tail of bacteriophages.
