Background • Formed in 1896 by Viktor Chernov • Grew from Populist movement: 2ndgeneration-“the people” • “part of the peasants”- agrarian form of socialism • Influenced by “Narodniks” and “People’s Will”:Revolutionary socialism, dominated by terrorist faction from 1901-1905 • SR Combat Organization • Promoted armed uprising and terrorism, wanted to continue the war

  3. Accomplishments • Gained support in 1905 revolution • Held first formal Congress in Finland in 1905 • Took 36 seats in 1906 Dumaelection • 243 delegates out of 1,090 elected in the First Congress of Soviets in 1917 • Won 20,900,000 votes, 58%, in 1917 elections for the Constituent Assembly

  4. However… • Infiltrated by Okhranaagents • During era of “Provisional Government,” SR attempted to strengthen relationship with the Bolsheviks- failed • Outlawed by the Bolsheviks in 1917, but remained most popular party in Russia • Faction in 1906
