  2. TODAY’S OBJECTIVE • The student will learn how to calculate the sample space of an event based on specific combinations.

  3. VOCABULARY • Combinations: Arrangements or listings where order is not important. (can use tree diagrams or lists to find) • Permutations: Arrangements of objects in a particular order. (can use a tree diagram to find)

  4. EXAMPLE 1 At Teyas Middle School, there are five members on the gymnastics team. Coach Reyes must choose two of the members to be team captains. In how many ways can he choose two captains from five team members? Let V, W, X, Y, and Z represent the team members. List all of the ways two team captains can be chosen.

  5. EXAMPLE 1 Rewrite the list, taking out any repeats. There are 10 ways Coach Reyes can choose two team captains.

  7. PRACTICE • A teacher must select a pair of students to represent the class at a tree-planting ceremony. There are six students eligible to be chosen because of their excellent attendance at school. In how many ways can the pair be chosen? There are 15 ways the pair can be chosen.
