International Baccalaureate Diploma Program The IB Diploma Program is a comprehensive and rigorous pre-university course of study for the highly motivated secondary student. It was designed to develop the individual talents of young people molding them into truly well-rounded, well-educated individuals who are aware that they are members of a complex, global society.
Key findings from research on the impact of IB programmes in the Americas • A study, including IB Diploma candidates who graduated from US high schools in 2008 indicated that IB students were much less likely to drop out of college and had much higher graduation rates than the national average. 98% of IB Diploma graduates continued on to their second year of college and had overall four-year graduation rates of 79% compared to the national average of 39%.

Comparing the IB Diploma Program to the Advanced Placement Program • Each year the International Baccalaureate releases the University Admissions Officers Report. This report is based on research carried out by ACS International Schools, in partnership with the IB and the IB Schools and Colleges Association (IBSCA). • The 2015 report shows the following results when admissions officers from universities across the United States were asked to compare the IB Diploma Program and the Advanced Placement Program and rate how well the two programs prepared students for university in certain qualities necessary for success in college.
Comparing the IB Diploma and Advanced Placement Programs • Universities were asked about certain qualities they look for in university applicants. The data below indicates the percentages of the universities who reported that the exam system prepared students “extremely well” for the following two qualities: The IBDP Advanced Placement Encouraging independent inquiry 95% 89% Developing self management skills 95% 89%

International Baccalaureate Exam Results 2018 Statistics: • WHS Diploma Pass Rate 85% • Worldwide Pass Rate 78% • WHS Average points to obtain diploma 31 • Worldwide Average points to obtain diploma 29 • WHS Average score on exams 4.97 • Worldwide Average score on exams 4.79
Requirements of the IB Program for obtaining the IB Diploma: • Over the course of 2 years students will complete: • 6 Exams – subject to registration & exam costs • Extended Essay that requires a staff advisor • CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) that requires a staff advisor
WHS Pre-IB Application Process • Must Meet 2 Criteria: • Have a 3.00 GPA in Core Academic Courses at the 8th grade level. • Have completed Algebra I by the end of summer following the 8th grade. • Complete & submit application & a copy of 1st semester report card by February 8.
New Option Available to WHS Pre-IB Students! • Incoming WHS Pre-IB 9th graders now have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) Human Geography as a freshman • Advantages to this option include: • Opportunity to take an Advanced Placement (AP) course as a freshman • AP Human Geography meets World History high school graduation requirement. • students have opportunity to replace a high school course required for graduation with an Advanced Placement course on their high school transcripts!
Requirements for New WHS Pre-IB Option with AP Human Geography • Students must meet criteria for admission to the WHS Pre-IB Program • Students must apply for this option – 38 spaces are available. • Students who apply for this option and qualify will be entered into a lottery for one of these spaces
Requirements for New WHS Pre-IB Option with AP Human Geography – con’t • If selected for this option, students must commit to participating in the WHS IB program for all four years – students will take WHS pre-IB courses in the 9th and 10th grade and then are committed to continuing on to the full IB Diploma Program for the junior and senior years • A $200 deposit for the IB registration is due at the freshman summer registration appointment with the GLC if accepted.
Requirements for New WHS Pre-IB Option with AP Human Geography – con’t • Students who meet the WHS Pre-IB criteria and apply for the AP Human Geography option but are NOT selected will still be accepted to our regular WHS Pre-IB Program
WHS Pre-IB Ninth Grade Schedule Option 1 • Students accepted to the WHS Pre-IB Program taking AP Human Geography as a 9th grader will meet with their WHS counselor (GLC) to discuss their schedule for the 9th grade

Advantages of completing an IB Diploma Program • Universities see the IB Diploma program as the most rigorous program available to students. • Potential Savings in College Tuition: • By earning the full IB diploma with a score of 30 or above can earn students credit for all SL & HL exams passed. • University of California System – awards 30 quarter units - ~$13,500 (Tuition - ~$13,400/year) • Chapman University – awards minimum of 21 semester units - ~$40,750 (Tuition - ~$46, 500/year) • University of La Verne – awards up to 32 semester units - ~$38,500 (tuition - ~$38,500/year) • USC – awards 20 semester units of elective credit - ~$28,000 (Tuition - ~$49,450/year)

WHS Pre-IB Application Process • If your student would like to apply to the WHS Pre-IB with the option of taking AP Human Geography: • Fill out the BLUE application and turn it in directly to the WHS front office by Feb. 8 • If your student would like to apply to our general Pre-IB program: • Fill out the application attached to your handout. These can be turned in to the WHS front office or the front office of your child’s middle school by Feb. 8 PLEASE FILL OUT ONLY ONE APPLICATION!
Check the WHS website for Summer School Registration Information • Summer School is highly recommended but not required. • More information on summer School can be found on the Walnut High School website www.walnuths.net under the Courtesy Link to the Dedicated 2 Learning Website by mid-February. Registration will begin the approximately first week of March.
