Lesson Goal: As part of an inter-disciplinary lesson, learn to write an “authentic” short story. Outcomes: Be able to . . . Write a first person short story in which the main character is a post-9/11 Arab American. Applythe 6-step writing process: 1) Pre-write 2) Rough draft 3) Edit 4) Type 5) Proofread 6) Final copy—no errors
Starter #1: Please take out a sheet of notebook paper. Today and for the next two days, we are going to use class time as a “writing lab.” You will do the following (please write these steps on your notebook paper): Create a pre-write—brainstorm ideas as they come to mind. Write your story—this is called your “rough draft.” Edit your hand-written rough draft (“fix” problem spots) Type your rough draft and save it to your flash drive. Proofread your typed story (read it and correct errors) Key in corrections on your Word document At home, print out your story Place a check mark by each step after you have completed it. Plan to devote 20 minutes of homework time daily on this work.
Starter#2: Pretend that you are an Arab American. Keep that thought in mind as we look at our rubric. What’s a “rubric”? Let’s look at the rubric you will be using for your assignment. What do we know about Arab Americans? Consider this: http://www.pbs.org/itvs/caughtinthecrossfire/arab_americans.html Begin your pre-write in class: Make up your Arab American identity.
