A target driven approach Three part structure – infrastructure, institutions and development and societal benefits A streamlined number of tasks Nine Societal Benefit Areas – including a Weather SBA GEO Work Plan 2012 - 2015
The Strategic Target for Weather : Close critical gaps in meteorological, ocean and related observations , enhance observational capabilities and improve weather information, especially for high impact events and in the developing world. To be achieved through the programmes and activites of the WMO GEO Strategic targets - 2015
WWRP-THORPEX activities within the 2012-2015 Work Plan • WE-01 Global Multi-Model prediction System for High Impact Weather • GEOWOW (GEOSS Interoperability for Weather, Oceans and Water) – EU funded project led by ESA, The weather component led by ECMWF
GEOWOW Progress • Enhancements to database of ensemble global weather forecasts from ten production centres (TIGGE) at ECMWF: Australia (BOM), Brazil (CPTEC), Canada (CMC), China (CMA), France (MétéoFrance), Japan (JMA), Korea (KMA), UK (Met Office), USA (NCEP) and ECMWF • Development of prototype near real time multi-model ensemble products for tropical cyclone forecasting and initial evaluation through the WMO Severe Weather Forecast Demonstration Projects (SWFDPs) • A database of European regional ensemble weather forecasts (TIGGE-LAM) : registered in GCI • http://apps.ecmwf.int/datasets/data/tigge_lam/
CL -01 : Weather, Climate and Earth-System Prediction Systems Contributions to CL-01-C3 • YOTC • S2S
Fifth GEOSS evaluation report November 2014 • The Weather SBA is advancing well largely as the result of TIGGE and the availability of TIGGE products through GEOWOW. End users are engaged through the WMO SWFDPs …..
The Strategic Plan 2016-2025 • GEO Ministerial agreed GEO should continue for a further 10 years • The Implementation Plan WG (IPWG) has drafted an outline of the new plan – considered at the recent GEO Plenary. • Seeks greater clarity concerning the purpose, scope and strategic objectives • Consider three action areas, Advocate, Engage, Deliver • Develop new management mechanisms and strengthen the role of the GEO Secretariat and the POs • Evolve the set of SBAs to promote cross community linkages
