VA RUSLE2 Guidance Series:Setting up RUSLE2 on SecondaryUSDA Service Center Computers February 9, 2005 Chris Lawrence, NRCS Agronomist 804/287-1680 or chris.lawrence@va.usda.gov
Purpose & Applicability • This slideshow provides step-by-step instructions for preparing additional USDA Service Center computers for running RUSLE2. • This process involves making changes to the C: drive ONLY.
Use these instructions only if the following tasks have been already been completed in your Service Center: • Moses file for your Service Center has been renamed and placed on the F: drive. • This renamed moses file has been customized by importing updated national base data as well as climate, soils, and crop management data relevant to your area.
If the tasks on the previous slide have not yet been competed in your Service Center, see the Powerpoints entitled: Setting Up RUSLE2 on Your Primary USDA Service Center Computer Customizing Your Moses File by Importing
Do not use these instructions if any of the following apply to you: • You have past RUSLE2 work worth saving • Contact Chris Lawrence for one-on-one assistance. • You are not in a USDA Service Center • Special instructions are being developed for you. Contact Chris Lawrence for assistance if necessary. Contact information: (804) 287-1680 chris.lawrence@va.usda.gov
You will now carry out the following three key steps: • Install August 2004 RUSLE2 software (first time or upgrade); • Direct RUSLE2 to use your renamed, customized moses file on your F: drive; • Put latest RUSLE2 data on your C: drive.
Step 1: Upgrade to August 2004 RUSLE2 Software • Start RUSLE2 to check your current version • If needed, request install of August 2004 version from IT
Look here to determine what version you have. “Aug 4 2004” is the version we will start using in Virginia as of January 2005.
If needed, request RUSLE2install or upgrade from IT • Submit electronic Help Desk request • http://www.itteam.va.nrcs.usda.gov/cgi-bin/wonderdesk/wonderdesk.cgi • Your computer name may be helpful to IT • Go to your desktop • Right click on “My Computer” • Open “Properties” • Click on tab “Computer Name”
Step 2: Direct RUSLE2 to use the renamed, customized moses on your F: drive • Start by opening RUSLE2…
In the “Database to open” dialog box, navigate to the F: drive, then open the “RUSLE2data” folder
Next, open the “R2.MOSES” subfolder and select your renamed moses
Once RUSLE2 starts running off your renamed moses, the file name will appear here.
Go back to the “Database” menu and put a check next to “Startup database”. This tells RUSLE2 to always use the renamed moses on the F: drive on startup.
Delete the following folders: 1. Import 2. Printing 3. Users You may also delete any moses files you have here…
Now open F:\RUSLE2data Then open the R2.UPDATE DATA subfolder
Copy the zipped 2005.01.C.Drive.Data file Paste it in your C:\Program Files\USDA\RUSLE2 folder
Keep a copy of this file in your F: drive. You will need it for any additional C: drives in the Service Center that will run RUSLE2 You may now close the F: drive
Now the C: drive is the only window open. Extract the zipped data file: 1. Right click 2. Go to “WinZip” 3. Select “Extract to here”
When the extraction is complete, you will see three new folders containing updated RUSLE2 data. You can now delete the zipped data file from your C: drive.
Your final result should look like this You have not only brought in the latest data for importing into your moses. You have also brought in important updates to printing and user templates.
CONGRATULATONS! • You have the latest RUSLE2 software on your C: drive; • You have directed RUSLE2 to use the renamed, customized moses on your F: drive; • You have latest RUSLE2 data on your C: drive. You are now ready to run RUSLE2!
