  2. Opening Adjectives 2 Definition: An adjective, or adjective phrase, at the opening of a sentence. An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun: happy, sad, angry glad, sneaky, polite, disruptive, etc. An adjective phrase includes the adjective and the words that complete the description: happy to graduate, sad because her pet died, angry at my mother, etc.

  3. Examples of Opening Adjectives: 3 Single opening adjective: Exhausted, the football team headed to the locker room. Multiple opening adjectives: Exhausted and defeated, the football team headed to the locker room. Opening adjective phrases: Exhausted to the point of collapse, the football team headed to the locker room. A comma follows an opening adjective whether a single word or a phrase!

  4. PRACTICE: 4 Write five sentences containing opening adjectives. Share with your row partner—be ready to share out.
