Protestant Reformers • John Calvin – A Swiss reformer who developed the doctrine of predestination, which taught that God directs everything that happens in the past, the present, and the future. • John Knox a follower of Calvin taught his followers in Scotland that they are only to obey their rulers if they were upright and moral and true to God.
The Anglican Church • Reformation ideas flowed to England in the 1500’s but was brought to a head when Henry VIII and the Pope had a quarrel. • Henry was unable to produce a male heir with his wife, Catherine Aragon, and his request for divorce was turned down. • With the help of the English Parliament, Henry VIII separated from the church and was given control the clergy.
The Anglican Church • Henry VIII would marry Anne Boleyn, and produce a daughter, Elizabeth, Henry VIII would have Anne tried for treason and had her beheaded. • Henry VIII would marry Jane Seymour and would produce an heir Edward VI, a sickly boy who would die at the age of 15.
The Anglican Church • Henry VIII would die in 1547, Edward VI would become King at the age of nine and die at the age of 15. • When Edward died, Mary became Queen of England. She attempted to restore the Catholic Church in England by burning hundreds of protestants at the stake, earning her the name, “Bloody Mary”.
The Anglican Church • In 1558 Mary’s sister Elizabeth I would become Queen of England. • She would create the Anglican Church, which was a blend of protestant belief and Catholic rituals. • Not all were happy with this, wanting to purify the English church of all things Catholic. They would be known as Puritans.
