  2. The Zwinglian Reformation • Ulrich Zwingi- priest in Zurich, Switzerland • Could not agree with Lutherans on meaning of Communion. • Zwingli killed by enemies in battle.

Calvin and Calvinism • John Calvin- Institutes of the Christian Religion. • Predestination- God could determine in advance those who would be saved and who would be damned. • Geneva, Switzerland- became the fortress for Protestant Reformation. • Trained missionaries to spread Calvinism throughout Europe. • By mid 16th century Calvinism replaced Lutheranism as most important form of Protestantism.

Reformation of England • The Act of Supremacy of 1534 • Declared the king supreme head on Earth of the (new) Church of England- Anglican Church. • Done to be able to divorce wife. • Edward VI- heir to throne after Henry’s death • “Bloody Mary”- Wanted to restore England to Roman Catholicism and had over 300 Protestants burned.

  5. Anabaptists • Adult Baptisms • Believed in the separation of Church and State • Seen as radicals by both Protestants and Catholics
