Calvin and Calvinism • John Calvin- Institutes of the Christian Religion. • Predestination- God could determine in advance those who would be saved and who would be damned. • Geneva, Switzerland- became the fortress for Protestant Reformation. • Trained missionaries to spread Calvinism throughout Europe. • By mid 16th century Calvinism replaced Lutheranism as most important form of Protestantism.
Reformation of England • The Act of Supremacy of 1534 • Declared the king supreme head on Earth of the (new) Church of England- Anglican Church. • Done to be able to divorce wife. • Edward VI- heir to throne after Henry’s death • “Bloody Mary”- Wanted to restore England to Roman Catholicism and had over 300 Protestants burned.
